Jazz and classical music on the Fiora river pier in Montalto Marina
Born in nearby Tarquinia and growing into one of the premier musical events in Upper Lazio, the Etruria Musica Festival has found one of its most evocative venues in Montalto di Castro. For several seasons, the festival has been hosted in Montalto Marina, on the Fiora river pier, where the audience enjoys concerts suspended between the blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the low profile of the Maremma coast. It is a simple yet successful formula: high-level music, outdoors, with no admission fee.
The programming in Montalto moves naturally between jazz, classical music, and Mediterranean sounds. Over the years, the pier has hosted saxophone quartets, piano recitals, Hammond organ ensembles, and big names from the Italian jazz scene. The artistic direction favors projects that engage with the landscape: intimate, acoustic repertoires that find an involuntary but perfect accompaniment in the background noise of the sea at 9:30 PM.
The municipality of Montalto di Castro, in the province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio, is a land with a dual soul. Inland, you find the ancient village, the countryside, and above all the archaeological site of Vulci, one of the great Etruscan cities, with its nature park and the bridge over the Fiora gorge. Toward the coast lies Montalto Marina, with its beaches and tourist harbor. The festival, which fittingly bears the name Etruria, bridges these two dimensions: the historical layering of the territory and the seaside life of the Lazio summer.
The Montalto Marina dates are one chapter of the Etruria Musica Festival, which throughout the same summer offers numerous other events in Tarquiniaโin cloisters, arenas, and archaeological sitesโas well as a Winter Edition. Those staying on the Viterbo coast can therefore build a multi-evening itinerary by traveling just a few kilometers along the Aurelia road.
In an Italian summer crowded with events, the Etruria Musica Festival in Montalto di Castro stands out for three reasons: the quality of the artists, which is far beyond the typical local festival; the free admission, which makes high culture accessible to everyone; and the location, a river pier overlooking the sea that is worth the trip in itself. It is the kind of evening you remember longer than a massive stadium concert.
For 2026, the Etruria Musica Festival confirms its presence in Montalto Marina, in the Municipality of Montalto di Castro, with four free events spread between late July and the days leading up to Ferragosto. The stage is the now-recognizable Fiora river pier, accessible from Piazzale dei Pescatori.
The lineup alternates between jazz and chamber music: it starts with the encounter between the saxophone of Javier Girotto and the accordion of Vince Abbracciante, in a program that weaves together jazz, tango, and Mediterranean influences, and concludes with a solo piano recital. All concerts begin at 9:30 PM and are free of charge.
The Montalto dates are part of a broader summer schedule that also touches Tarquinia, with sunrise concerts, classical recitals, and spoken-word and music performances.
Other events of the same edition take place in Tarquinia between late July and Ferragosto, with shows, classical concerts, and traditional sunset and sunrise performances.
By car: take the Montalto di Castro exit from the SS1 Aurelia, then follow signs for Montalto Marina (approx. 5 km). By train: Montalto di Castro station on the Rome-Grosseto line, then bus or taxi to the marina. Nearest airports: Rome Fiumicino (approx. 110 km) and Grosseto.
Concerts are held on the Fiora river pier, with access from Piazzale dei Pescatori in Montalto Marina. Parking is available on the seafront streets, but they fill up quickly on August evenings.
Free admission, no booking required, subject to availability. It is recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start.
Bring a light sweater: on the pier, after sunset, the sea breeze can be chilly. Numerous restaurants and beach clubs on the seafront allow for dinner before the concert. To combine in the same day: the Vulci Naturalistic Archaeological Park, about a fifteen-minute drive away.
