The International History Festival of Gorizia
For over twenty years, every spring, Gorizia has become the Italian capital of historical dissemination thanks to èStoria, the International History Festival. For a week, the border city fills with conferences, debates, lectures, book presentations, and meetings with major figures from the academic, cultural, and journalistic world, in a program that revolves around a different theme each year.
Organized by the èStoria Cultural Association, the festival has made Gorizia a reference point for anyone who loves history, from scholars to students, from the simply curious to enthusiasts. Its location, in a city symbolic of 20th-century Europe and now a European Capital of Culture along with Nova Gorica, reinforces its international vocation and its ability to interpret the past in a European context.
The heart of the festival is the Erodoto Tent, the symbolic space that hosts many of the meetings, but the events spread throughout the city: from the Giuseppe Verdi Municipal Theater to Palazzo de Grazia, from university auditoriums to historic city center locations. Each edition features hundreds of events and hosts hundreds of guests, including renowned historians, writers, journalists, and witnesses.
Alongside the program of meetings, èStoria annually awards the èStoria Prize and special prizes to personalities who have distinguished themselves in historical research and dissemination. The festival also hosts the èStoria Film Festival, the film review that complements the spoken word with the language of cinema, with screenings and meetings with directors and authors.
More than just a festival, èStoria is an opportunity to use history as a key to understanding the present. Each edition tackles a major theme—from wars to revolutions, from migrations to religions—inviting the public to reflect on the roots of our times. It is an event that attracts thousands of visitors from all over Italy and abroad, contributing to making Gorizia a city of culture open to the world.
The twenty-second edition of èStoria, the International History Festival, is held in Gorizia from May 25 to 31, 2026, and is dedicated to the theme of "Religions." The program includes hundreds of events held in numerous city venues, including the Erodoto Tent, the Giuseppe Verdi Municipal Theater, and Palazzo de Grazia, with the participation of scholars, writers, and journalists.
The inauguration at the Verdi Theater is scheduled for May 28; among the opening events, Beethoven's Mass in C will be performed by the FVG Orchestra. The 2026 èStoria Prize is awarded to Laura Pepe, with special prizes to Enzo Bianchi and Giulio Busi. In parallel, the sixth edition of the èStoria Film Festival takes place from May 25 to 31, with screenings and meetings with directors.
Among the announced guests are Andrea Riccardi, Giovanni Brizzi, Francesco Remotti, Massimo Raveri, and Emanuele Viotti. The complete program, continuously updated, is available on the website www.estoria.it.
The events take place in various venues in the center of Gorizia, including the Erodoto Tent, the Giuseppe Verdi Municipal Theater, and Palazzo de Grazia.
Most events are free admission, subject to availability; booking is required for events at the Verdi Theater.
