Estate all'Olmo is one of the most deeply rooted summer festivals in the town of Fondi, located in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio. Born from the initiative of the Associazione di Servizi Culturali Confronto, the event has been held without interruption for over twenty-eight consecutive years, reaching its thirty-first edition in August 2025. This milestone has been repeatedly cited by the municipal administration as a prime example of local community engagement, earning the festival a permanent spot on the city's official summer calendar.

Piazza delle Benedettine, an open-air theatre

The heart of the event is Piazza delle Benedettine, in the historic centre of Fondi, just a short walk from the Castello Caetani and the maze of alleys in the Giudea district. The square is equipped with a stage and a large screen: evenings typically begin around 9:00 PM, when the heat of the Fondi plain subsides and the audience—families, residents, and holidaymakers from the Pontine coast—fills the chairs arranged in front of the stage. The atmosphere is that of a classic Lazio village festival: people arrive early to find a seat, chat with neighbours, and enjoy the show under the August sky.

Cinema, music, and dialect theatre

The programme for Estate all'Olmo is intentionally multidisciplinary, blending different genres throughout the week:

• Big-screen film screenings, often dedicated to figures of Italian popular culture and local history;
• Concerts and local musical groups, with repertoires ranging from the 1970s and 80s to classic Italian songs;
• Musical recitals featuring performers from the Lazio and Campania scenes;
• Comedies in the Fondi dialect performed by the Nuova compagnia di Teatro Popolare "Nino Canale", a true unmissable highlight of the festival;
• Folk music and tradition evenings, featuring songs and dances from the rural culture of lower Lazio.

Dialect theatre, the heart of the festival

If there is one element that defines Estate all'Olmo, it is the vernacular comedy. As organiser Carlo Alberoni has explained, no edition is complete without a comedy in the Fondi dialect: it is the moment when the square is at its most crowded, as the audience recognises their own language, idioms, and local character types on stage. Recent years have seen productions such as "P' l' macchje vaje" and, in August 2025, the two-act comedy "I due badanti", performed for two consecutive nights by the "Nino Canale" company. For visitors from outside the area, it is the most direct way to connect with the oral culture of Fondi.

Estate all'Olmo is not an isolated event: it is part of the summer programme of the Municipality of Fondi—known in recent years as Estatissima—alongside historic events such as the International Folklore Festival, the Fondi Film Festival – Riviera d'Ulisse, the Fondi Music Festival, and the Notte Bianca in August. Those staying on the Riviera d'Ulisse, between Sperlonga, Terracina, and Gaeta, can easily combine an evening at the Olmo with the rest of the city's calendar.
