The international short film and documentary festival of Northern Naples, now also hosted in Calvizzano
The NaNo Film Festival is an international event dedicated to short films and documentaries, founded in 2020 in the northern area of Naples. Organized by the NaNo Film Cultural Association, the event has quickly established itself as one of the most vibrant fixtures in the emerging and independent film scene of Southern Italy. The festival's historic home is the Teatro Area Nord in Piscinola, the cultural heart of a territory that the festival helps to promote through the language of cinema.
Starting with the sixth edition in 2025, the NaNo Film Festival expanded its geography to the Municipality of Calvizzano, in the Province of Naples, thanks to a collaboration with the administration led by Mayor Giacomo Pirozzi. The Municipal Council Chamber of Calvizzano has thus become a new venue for the festival, hosting morning screenings, book presentations, podcast recordings, and meetings with authors and industry professionals. The Calvizzano events open with the "Culture & Territory" conference, a moment of dialogue between the festival and the local community.
The festival offers a rich, multidisciplinary program featuring over fifty works from around fifteen countries, structured into several competitive sections:
Each edition brings actors, directors, and authors of contemporary Italian cinema to Piscinola and Calvizzano, alongside book presentations, masterclasses, and Q&A sessions with the audience. In addition to screenings, the festival features cross-disciplinary events, from music album launches to meetings with professionals from major industry players, including the Film Commission Regione Campania and leading national film festivals.
With its dual location between Piscinola and Calvizzano, the NaNo Film Festival highlights a part of Campania often left on the fringes of major cultural circuits, transforming it into a laboratory for independent cinema open to the world. The event combines an international vocation with local roots, offering young authors a showcase and local audiences an opportunity to experience great auteur cinema close to home.
The new edition of the NaNo Film Festival is scheduled from September 23 to 26, 2026. The international short film and documentary festival returns with its competitive sections, meetings with authors and professionals, and the Industry Area dedicated to the audiovisual sector. The detailed program, including the line-up, schedule, venues, and guests, will be published by the organizers on the festival's official channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Events take place in the Municipal Council Chamber of Calvizzano (Naples) and at the Teatro Area Nord in Piscinola, the festival's historic venue.
Calvizzano can be reached by car via the Naples Tangenziale and the Asse Mediano; by public transport, it is connected to Naples via the northern area bus lines. Piscinola is served by the Piscinola-Scampia station on Line 1 of the Naples Metro.
Events hosted in the Calvizzano Municipal Council Chamber are free and open to the public. For events at the Teatro Area Nord, please check access details on official channels.
