The Easter ritual of the encounter between the Risen Christ and the Madonna in the heart of Mineo
In Mineo, an ancient village in the Province of Catania perched on the Iblei Mountains in the center of the Calatino plain, Easter is not just a religious holiday but the moment when the entire community gathers around one of its most deep-rooted traditions: the 'Ncrinata. The local term, found in various forms throughout Southern Italy under the name Affruntata, signifies the solemn encounter between the Risen Christ and the Madonna, the true dramatic and spiritual climax of the Easter rites.
On the evening of Holy Saturday, the statue of the Madonna, covered by a black mourning veil, is carried in procession through the village streets. It is the anticipation that precedes the event. On Easter Sunday at noon, the representation takes place in the squares and streets of the historic center: the dark veil suddenly falls, the band plays festive music, and the sky lights up with fireworks. In that instant, the two statuesโthe Risen Christ and the Virgin, finally freed from mourningโare "rushed" toward each other and bow repeatedly, amidst general emotion.
As in all great Sicilian Holy Week rites, the brotherhoods are the guardians and animators of the ceremony. The members of the brotherhoods accompany the statues, "call" them, and mark the moments of the ritual; as the black veil falls, they reveal the faces of the statues and raise a cry of jubilation for the Resurrection to the sky. Public participation is total: the historic center fills with residents and visitors who watch the 'Ncrinata with emotion, concluding with a long, liberating applause.
Mineo, the ancient Menai of the Sicels, is one of the most evocative villages in the Calatino area, home to the poet Luigi Capuana and guardian of a heritage of churches and historic palaces. Local devotion revolves around the patron saint Saint Agrippina, venerated in the Collegiate Church dedicated to her. Alongside the Easter 'Ncrinata, the calendar of local festivals includes the feast of Mary Queen of Angels in May, the great patronal celebrations of Saint Agrippina in August, and the famous Living Nativity during the Christmas period.
The 2026 edition of the Easter 'Ncrinata in Mineo was held on Sunday, April 5, 2026, coinciding with Easter Sunday. The ritual followed the traditional pattern: on the evening of Holy Saturday, the statue of the Madonna, wrapped in the black mourning mantle, was carried in procession; at noon on Sunday, in the historic center, the 'Affruntata' took place with the falling of the veil and the running of the statues of the Risen One and the Virgin, accompanied by the band, the explosion of fireworks, and the festive sound of the bells, amidst the emotion and applause of the community of Mineo.
Holy Saturday: evening procession of the Madonna with the black mantle. Easter Sunday, around 12:00 PM: 'Ncrinata in the historic center, with the falling of the black mantle, the running, and the repeated bowing of the statues of the Risen Christ and the Madonna, accompanied by a band, fireworks, and festive bells.
The 'Ncrinata takes place on Easter Sunday around noon in the historic center of Mineo. In 2026, Easter falls on Sunday, April 5th.
