About Easter Monday in Archaeology

Every Easter Monday, Canosa di Puglia opens the doors to its extraordinary archaeological heritage with "Easter Monday in Archaeology," the guided tour "A walk through time" promoted by the Amici dell'Archeologia Association and the Fondazione Archeologica Canosina. A stroll through Daunian hypogea, Norman monuments, and Roman domus, featuring the special opening of the San Leucio Archaeological Park and the option of a traditional Canosino lunch at partner restaurants. A unique, cultural way to experience Easter Monday in the BAT province.

A different kind of Easter Monday, between archaeology and tradition

Easter Monday in Archaeology is the event where Canosa di Puglia, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT), turns Easter Monday into a day of discovery for its immense historical heritage. Instead of the classic picnic, the Amici dell'Archeologia Association, in collaboration with the Fondazione Archeologica Canosina, offers the guided tour "A walk through time": a walking itinerary in the heart of the city that spans over two thousand years of history, from the Daunians to the Romans, and from the early Christians to the Normans.

An itinerary through the treasures of Canusium

Canosa, the ancient Canusium, is one of the cities richest in archaeological layers in all of Puglia. The guided route leads visitors to discover some of its most significant sites:

  • Mausoleum of Bohemond of Hauteville (12th century), the tomb of the Norman prince and First Crusade protagonist, attached to the Cathedral;
  • Scocchera B Hypogeum (4th-3rd century BC), a Daunian-era underground tomb with its subterranean chambers;
  • Cathedral of San Sabino (6th century), one of the oldest churches in Puglia;
  • Roman Domus (1st century BC - 1st century AD), an Augustan-age residence with an Italic-style atrium layout.

For the event, there is also a special opening of the San Leucio Archaeological Park, one of the city's iconic sites, which can be visited throughout the day.

Culture, nature, and gastronomy

The charm of this initiative lies in combining guided visits with the conviviality typical of Easter Monday. At the end of the tour, participants can enjoy set menus at participating restaurants to taste traditional Canosino and Apulian dishes. An experience designed for families, history buffs, and the curious, largely held indoors and therefore suitable even in case of bad weather.

An event in Canosa di Puglia, in the heart of Puglia

Promoted with the patronage of the Municipality of Canosa di Puglia and the Apulia Region, "Easter Monday in Archaeology" is now a staple of the Canosino spring calendar. It represents a precious opportunity to enhance the archaeological identity of the BAT territory and to experience Easter Monday in an alternative way, dedicated to beauty, history, and Apulian hospitality.
