Easter Monday amidst art, local flavors, and tradition in the village of Casoli
In the heart of Abruzzo, at the foot of the Majella massif, the town of Casoli (Chieti province) celebrates Easter Monday with Pasquetta al Castello, an event that transforms the historic center and the majestic Ducal Castle into a lively celebration. Promoted by the Pro Loco Casulae, the event offers a day dedicated to culture, gastronomy, and conviviality, designed for families, history buffs, and curious visitors alike.
A symbol of the village, the Ducal Castle of Casoli originated around an ancient watchtower and passed through the hands of noble families over the centuries, such as the Orsini, the d'Aquino—who obtained the ducal title—and finally the Masciantonio, who gave it its current stately appearance. Within these walls, Pasquale Masciantonio hosted illustrious figures of Abruzzese culture, including Gabriele D'Annunzio, the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, and the musician Francesco Paolo Tosti. Today, the castle is a museum and exhibition space that recounts the history of the town, from the Carricini tribe to the Second World War.
During Pasquetta al Castello, visitors can participate in free guided tours of the castle and the nearby church of Santa Maria Maggiore, climbing up to the tower to admire the panorama stretching from the Majella to the Adriatic Sea. The halls of the Ducal Palace host photography and art exhibitions, while children can enjoy creative workshops organized by the MajeutiCa association.
The squares and alleys of Casoli's historic center come alive with food stalls offering local specialties, including products from the Peperone Dolce di Altino association, accompanied by live folk music that brings a festive and convivial atmosphere to the day. In case of bad weather, events will be moved indoors to the halls of the Ducal Palace.
Casoli, which owes its ancient name 'Casulae' to an agglomeration of small houses, has been part of the 'Borghi più belli d'Italia' (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) network since 2020. Visiting the village during Pasquetta al Castello is the perfect opportunity to discover its historical heritage and the traditions of the Chieti hinterland, set against the backdrop of the Abruzzo hills and the Majella National Park.
For Easter Monday 2026, the Pro Loco Casulae brought back Pasquetta al Castello for its second edition on Monday, April 6, 2026, in the historic center of Casoli.
The program featured free guided tours of the Ducal Castle and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, photography and art exhibitions in the halls of the Ducal Palace, and creative workshops for children organized by the MajeutiCa association. There was no shortage of food stalls, featuring products from the Peperone Dolce di Altino association and the Pro Loco Casulae, live music by the group Giando'musica DMG, and decorative displays by the i CreAttivi group. In case of bad weather, activities were held indoors in the halls of the Ducal Palace.
Casoli is located in the province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo hinterland at the foot of the Majella. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Val di Sangro exit) or the A25, continuing along the Fondovalle Sangro. The nearest railway stations are in Lanciano or Chieti, with bus connections to the village.
Event activities, including guided tours of the castle and church, are free. Food stalls offer tastings for a fee.
