The Palm Sunday market in the historic center of Lugo
Every year, Palm Sunday transforms the historic center of Lugo into a large open-air market: it's the Easter Fair, one of the most cherished events in the city's calendar in the Bassa Romagna region, province of Ravenna. About sixty vendors display their goods from early morning until evening, in a festive atmosphere that heralds the arrival of good weather and the imminent Easter.
This is a non-food market: among the stalls, you'll mainly find clothing, footwear, and accessories, along with everything you might need for Easter gifts and preparations. The fair occupies the squares and pedestrian streets in the heart of Lugo, winding through Piazza dei Martiri, Piazza Baracca, Largo della Repubblica, and the pedestrian part of Piazza Trisi, with the impressive sight of stalls stretching all the way under the Pavaglione.
The fair takes place just a stone's throw from the Pavaglione, the monumental quadrilateral portico built between 1771 and 1784 to a design by Giuseppe Campana, a rare example of 18th-century civil architecture. Built over an older 16th-century loggia, it was the hub of the thriving silk cocoon market (the complex's name derives from the Latin word papilio): even today, as two centuries ago, it hosts the weekly market and major city fairs. The Easter Fair is part of this long mercantile tradition that makes Lugo a commercial reference point for the entire Romagna plain.
Admission is free and open to all, and the fair is designed for families: a stroll among the stalls becomes an opportunity to rediscover Lugo's historic center, shop, and soak up the atmosphere of Holy Week. Organized by the Municipality of Lugo, the Easter Fair is one of the events that mark the Lugo spring in Emilia-Romagna.
The 2026 edition of the Easter Fair took place on Sunday, March 29, coinciding with Palm Sunday, from 8 AM to 8 PM, in the historic center of Lugo.
