Tractors, trailer pulling, and farming culture in the Vallo di Diano
The Diano Agrifestival is an event that celebrates the agricultural world, a passion for tractors, and the rural traditions of the Vallo di Diano. It takes place in Teggiano, in the province of Salerno, Campania, along Via Cannicelle in the Prato Perillo area: a large, flat space at the foot of the medieval village, historically tied to field work and the great festivals of peasant civilization. For two days, the agricultural landscape of Diano becomes the stage for a popular festival that blends sporting challenges, a tribute to labor, and conviviality.
The heart of the event is the trailer-pulling competition, dubbed "Hook and Pull." The formula is simple yet spectacular: each tractor must hook up a ballasted trailer and pull it along a set course in the shortest time possible. However, raw power isn't enough; it requires vehicle control, technique, nerves of steel, and significant driving skill, as the track, load, and traction constantly change the conditions of the test.
The contestant who takes the top spot in the general classification receives the "Absolute First" Prize, dedicated to the memory of Antonio Vertuccio, a well-known figure in the town. It is the most coveted award of the two-day event, giving the competition a value that goes beyond the stopwatch: a tribute from the community to someone who lived for the land and agricultural machinery as a daily passion.
Alongside the track, the exhibition and social side of the festival unfolds. There are agricultural machinery displays, comparing historic vehicles with the latest models, a food area with local gastronomic stalls, live music, and entertainment. The atmosphere is typical of Southern summer festivals: entire families spending the day outdoors, enthusiasts debating horsepower and soil treatment, and children discovering agricultural vehicles up close.
The choice of Prato Perillo is no coincidence. This hamlet of Teggiano has always been a symbolic place for local agricultural tradition, the same one that comes alive every summer during the re-enactment of the Pisatura, the ancient wheat threshing. The Vallo di Diano, a vast plain surrounded by the Apennines and overlooking the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, has built its identity on cereals, fodder, livestock, and dairies: here, the tractor is not a collector's item but a daily work tool, which is why the competition resonates so strongly with the public.
The Diano Agrifestival kicks off the summer program of the Municipality of Teggiano, titled "Summer Encounters", which accompanies residents and visitors from late July to late August with music, culture, shows, and sports. Those arriving for the competition can easily combine it with a visit to the historic center of Teggiano, one of the best-preserved villages in the province of Salerno, featuring the Macchiaroli Castle, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, and numerous medieval churches that make it an open-air museum.
The Diano Agrifestival is an authentic, non-touristy, and deeply felt festival that offers an up-close look at what agriculture means to an inland area of Campania. It is perfect for those looking for an event different from the usual summer food festivals, for agricultural machinery enthusiasts, and for families looking for a free day out in the open air.
The event was held on July 25-26, 2026 in Teggiano, in the province of Salerno, in the Via Cannicelle area of Prato Perillo. The program revolved around the "Hook and Pull" trailer-pulling competition, with tractors divided into eleven categories tasked with pulling a ballasted trailer along the race course.
In addition to the competition, the two days featured agricultural machinery displays, a food area with Vallo di Diano products, music, and entertainment for the whole family, with free admission. The event inaugurated the "Summer Encounters" summer series promoted by the Municipality of Teggiano, scheduled from July 25th to August 30th, 2026.
