The grassroots, anti-fascist festival of the Pigneto neighborhood celebrating April 25th
Days of Liberation - Pigneto Neighborhood Festival is the annual event where the Pigneto district, located in Rome's Municipio V (Metropolitan City of Rome, Lazio), celebrates the anniversary of the Liberation from Nazi-fascism. This is not an institutional or commercial event: the festival is promoted by the Quellə del 25 Aprile collective, an open group of residents, associations, social spaces, shops, and cultural entities that organize the program every year through volunteer work and self-funding.
The result is a manifestation that goes far beyond the single day of April 25th: for several years, the calendar has kicked off at the beginning of the month, spreading initiatives throughout the streets, gardens, venues, and squares of the neighborhood, transforming Pigneto into one large public space for memory and discussion.
Pigneto did not choose this anniversary by chance. A working-class district that grew between the two wars along the railway, the neighborhood was a hub of the Roman Resistance and still preserves plaques, tablets, and memories dedicated to partisans and victims of the bombings. It is also the neighborhood of neorealist cinema—where Pasolini and Rossellini filmed some of the most iconic images of working-class Rome—and today it stands as one of the most vibrant and diverse districts of the capital, with a dense network of associations, independent cultural spaces, urban gardens, and neighborhood committees. The historical route of the Liberation of Pigneto, which accompanies every edition, is the best synthesis of this intersection between streets, stories, and people.
The structure of the festival is well-established. In the two weeks leading up to the anniversary, dozens of events are hosted by local entities: documentary screenings, book presentations, meetings with historians and witnesses, photography exhibitions, children's workshops, and concerts in small venues. Then, on April 24th and 25th, everything converges in the Giardini Persiani-Nuccitelli and surrounding areas.
First-time visitors are struck by the family-friendly character of the festival: in the same garden, you will find children busy with Piccola Liberazione workshops, elderly residents sitting at the dinner tables, students, musicians, and volunteers at the stalls. Everything is free and based on voluntary contributions, with funding coming from subscriptions, the community kitchen, and the support of local businesses. The surrounding streets are closed to traffic for the occasion, returning the entire public space to pedestrians for two days.
More than a show to watch, Days of Liberation is a festival to walk through: you move from one garden to another, follow the parade, stop for a debate, and return for the evening concert. For those visiting Rome around April 25th, it is the most authentic way to get to know a neighborhood that has made participation its hallmark, far from the tourist circuits of the historic center but only a few minutes by metro from Termini and the Colosseum.
The 2026 edition, the twenty-third, took place in Rome from April 8th to 25th, with over twenty-five initiatives spread across the Pigneto neighborhood during the two weeks leading up to the weekend of April 24th and 25th at the Giardini Persiani-Nuccitelli. The theme chosen by the Quellə del 25 Aprile collective was the link between the memory of the Resistance and the struggles of the present, with a strong emphasis on international solidarity and the rejection of war.
As always, access was free and the festival relied on volunteer work, subscriptions, and the community kitchen. On the main days, the streets around Piazza Nuccitelli Persiani were closed to traffic, returning the entire public space to parades, stalls, tables, and the stage.
Over twenty-five events spread throughout the neighborhood: film screenings, book presentations, workshops, debates, and exhibitions hosted by social spaces, bookstores, and venues in Pigneto.
The heart of the festival is the Giardini Persiani-Nuccitelli, in Piazza Nuccitelli Persiani, Pigneto district, 00176 Rome. Initiatives also take place throughout Piazza delle Camelie, Parco delle Energie (ex Snia), Giardino Angelo Galafati, and various social spaces in the district.
By Metro: Line C, Pigneto or Malatesta stop; Line A, Manzoni stop, then tram 5 or 14. By Tram: lines 5, 14, and 19 with stops on Via Prenestina and Circonvallazione Casilina. By Train: Roma Termini station, then Metro C via San Giovanni. By Car: Not recommended; the neighborhood has pedestrian zones and traffic closures are planned during the festival days.
Free entry to all initiatives. The festival is self-funded: it is supported by voluntary contributions, the community kitchen, and solidarity stalls.
Wear comfortable shoes: the program moves on foot between gardens, squares, and streets. Children's activities are concentrated in the afternoon, while concerts run from the evening until late at night.
