The comic book and pop culture festival in the Etruscan town of Cortona
Cortona Comics is a festival dedicated to the world of comics, manga, and pop culture that brings the historic center of Cortona to life—a charming Etruscan town perched on the hills of the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany. Launched in 2023, the event has grown rapidly to become one of the most anticipated dates on the central Italian comic book calendar, blending high-quality national and international illustration with the allure of one of the most fascinating art cities in the Cortona area.
The festival is spread across the town's iconic landmarks. The Chiostro di Sant'Agostino (Via Guelfa convention center) hosts the Artist Alley, main exhibitions, workshops, and the gaming area; Palazzo Ferretti, on Via Nazionale, houses thematic experiences and special displays; Piazza Signorelli serves as the stage for shows, entertainment, and the cosplay contest; Piazza Garibaldi transforms into a market area with exhibitors and street food. The MAEC, the Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the City of Cortona, also participates with dedicated exhibitions.
At the heart of the event is the interaction between the public and the creators: over thirty comic artists attend each year for sketches, commissions, signings, and meet-and-greets. The program includes curated exhibitions and workshops for all ages focused on traditional drawing, manga, screenwriting, and illustration, led by guest artists and partner schools. Alongside comics, the festival features video games, cosplay, gadgets, specialized publishing, and collectibles, creating a festive atmosphere that engages families, young people, and collectors alike.
Among the most recent additions is the eSports area, featuring PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 stations and tournaments for the most popular titles. The cosplay contest is a must-see, bringing the best costumes in competition to Piazza Signorelli on Sunday, while the evening program offers live music and performances. The festival thus confirms itself as a multidisciplinary event, weaving together comics, gaming, music, and popular tradition within the unique setting of the Val di Chiana.
Attending Cortona Comics is also a chance to experience one of Italy's most beautiful towns. Between the MAEC, the Cathedral, the Teatro Signorelli, and the panoramic views over the Val di Chiana, the city offers top-tier historical and artistic heritage. The event, organized by Cortona Sviluppo with the support of the Municipality of Cortona, is the perfect occasion to combine a passion for comics with a day of cultural tourism in Tuscany.
The 2026 edition of Cortona Comics, the fourth, was held from June 5th to 7th under the theme "Secret Identities," inspired by the "PK – Behind the Mask" exhibition and the grand opening concert. The event spanned the Chiostro di Sant'Agostino, Palazzo Ferretti, Piazza Signorelli, Piazza Garibaldi, and the MAEC, with opening hours from 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM.
Among the protagonists were over thirty guest comic artists, including Giuseppe Camuncoli, Corrado Mastantuono, Andrea "Casty" Castellan, Claudio "Clod" Onesti, Federico Bertolucci, Maria Laura Sanapo, and many others. On Friday, June 5th, the opening was marked by a concert by Tony Pitony at the Stadio Santi Tiezzi. For the first time, an eSports area debuted with PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 stations, hosting tournaments for EA FC, Tekken, Fortnite, and Mario Kart. On Sunday, June 7th, Piazza Signorelli hosted the cosplay contest with awards, alongside workshops, exhibitions, and thematic experiences.
