A road race through the ruins of ancient Marruvium, capital of the Marsi people
Corri Marruvium is the premier running event in San Benedetto dei Marsi, a town in the Marsica area of the L'Aquila province, in Abruzzo. Organized by the ASD Briganti d'Abruzzo, the race takes its name from Marruvium, the ancient capital of the Marsi people, which once stood on the shores of the now-drained Fucino Lake and whose significant archaeological remains are still preserved in San Benedetto dei Marsi today.
The competitive course spans 9 kilometers, traversing the most evocative sites of the ancient Roman city. Athletes run past the Roman Amphitheatre, ancient domus, and monuments that tell the story of Marruvium's past, before crossing the finish line in front of the iconic Santa Sabina Portal. Alongside the competitive race, a non-competitive fun run of approximately 6 kilometers is also held, open to walkers, families, and enthusiasts.
Corri Marruvium is a key fixture in the UISP Corri Marsica circuit, which brings together the main road races and trail runs across the Marsica and Valle Peligna regions from June to October, and is also part of the regional Corrilabruzzo circuit. This calendar promotes sportsmanship, respect, and love for the land, connecting dozens of Abruzzo municipalities through a shared passion for running.
Each edition attracts over 150 runners from across Abruzzo, ranging from competitive athletes to casual enthusiasts. The race is much more than a sporting event: it is an opportunity to showcase the historical and archaeological heritage of San Benedetto dei Marsi, promote slow tourism, and strengthen the sense of community in a village with roots deep in the civilization of the Marsi.
The fourteenth edition of Corri Marruvium will take place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, in San Benedetto dei Marsi, in the province of L'Aquila. The date is official and is included in the 2026 calendar of the UISP Corri Marsica circuit, which this year runs from late June to October with around twenty road and trail running events across the Marsica and Valle Peligna regions.
The event, organized by the ASD Briganti d'Abruzzo, will once again feature the traditional 9-kilometer competitive course that traverses the archaeological sites of ancient Marruvium, finishing in front of the Santa Sabina Portal. Meeting times, start times, registration procedures, and information regarding the non-competitive route will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the race.
San Benedetto dei Marsi can be easily reached by car via the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, taking the Pescina exit. The nearest major railway station is Avezzano, a hub on the Rome-Pescara line, from which you can continue by car to the town.
Registration is handled online via the UISP circuit timing platforms and is generally also available on-site on the morning of the race. The meeting point and start line are located in the historic center, near the archaeological sites of Marruvium. It is recommended to check the official Corri Marsica channels for specific times and entry fees.
