About Corri Marruvium

Corri Marruvium is the signature road race of San Benedetto dei Marsi, located in the heart of the Abruzzo Marsica region, in the province of L'Aquila. Established in 2013, it features a 9-kilometer competitive course that winds through the sites of ancient Marruvium, the capital of the Marsi people, passing by the Roman Amphitheatre and finishing in front of the spectacular Santa Sabina Portal. Part of the UISP Corri Marsica and Corrilabruzzo circuits, the event blends sport, history, and local heritage in a celebration deeply felt by the entire Marsican community.

Running through the ancient city of the Marsi

Corri Marruvium is the premier running event in San Benedetto dei Marsi, a town in the Marsica area of the L'Aquila province, in Abruzzo. Organized by the ASD Briganti d'Abruzzo, the race takes its name from Marruvium, the ancient capital of the Marsi people, which once stood on the shores of the now-drained Fucino Lake and whose significant archaeological remains are still preserved in San Benedetto dei Marsi today.

A journey through history and archaeology

The competitive course spans 9 kilometers, traversing the most evocative sites of the ancient Roman city. Athletes run past the Roman Amphitheatre, ancient domus, and monuments that tell the story of Marruvium's past, before crossing the finish line in front of the iconic Santa Sabina Portal. Alongside the competitive race, a non-competitive fun run of approximately 6 kilometers is also held, open to walkers, families, and enthusiasts.

A highlight of the Marsican circuit

Corri Marruvium is a key fixture in the UISP Corri Marsica circuit, which brings together the main road races and trail runs across the Marsica and Valle Peligna regions from June to October, and is also part of the regional Corrilabruzzo circuit. This calendar promotes sportsmanship, respect, and love for the land, connecting dozens of Abruzzo municipalities through a shared passion for running.

Sport, community, and local pride

Each edition attracts over 150 runners from across Abruzzo, ranging from competitive athletes to casual enthusiasts. The race is much more than a sporting event: it is an opportunity to showcase the historical and archaeological heritage of San Benedetto dei Marsi, promote slow tourism, and strengthen the sense of community in a village with roots deep in the civilization of the Marsi.
