The solemnity of Corpus Domini in Torrevecchia

In the Torrevecchia district, on the north-western outskirts of Rome, the San Cipriano Parish celebrates the solemnity of Corpus Domini every year with a Eucharistic procession that involves the entire community. It is one of the most cherished religious events in the neighborhood: after the celebration of Holy Mass, the faithful take to the streets to accompany the Blessed Sacrament in a prayerful walk through the district's roads.

The procession route

The procession starts and ends at Largo Millesimo, in front of the parish church. The procession of the faithful travels along Via Moneglia, Via Taggia, Via Castelbianco, and Via di Torrevecchia, before returning to the starting point. During the procession, traffic and some local bus lines are temporarily slowed down or diverted to ensure the rite takes place safely.

The San Cipriano Parish

The community organizing the procession is based at the San Cipriano Parish, located at Via di Torrevecchia 169. The parish was established on December 12, 1957, by decree of Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara and entrusted to the diocesan clergy of Rome. The current church, with its characteristic octagonal plan made of exposed brick, was completed in 1975, and its altar was consecrated on May 25 of that year by Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti. Inside, two fine stained-glass windows dedicated to Day and Night stand out.

A neighborhood tradition

Corpus Domini is one of the oldest and most widespread feasts in the Catholic tradition, dedicated to the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In Torrevecchia, as in many other parishes of Rome and the Lazio region, the solemnity becomes an occasion for local families to meet, participating in large numbers with liturgical chants, prayers, and moments of reflection. The procession, which is free and open to all, represents an important element of the religious and social identity of the district.
