A carpet of petals and sacred imagery in the heart of Scurcola Marsicana

Every year, on the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the center of Scurcola Marsicana โ a town in the Marsica area, in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo โ is adorned with color for the Corpus Domini Infiorata. The Piazza del Mercato becomes the heart of the event: starting in the evening and continuing throughout the night, the pavement is covered in a grand carpet of petals depicting sacred images, Eucharistic symbols, and decorative motifs.
The Infiorata is much more than a decoration: it is a collective ritual that weaves together art, faith, and popular participation. Volunteers, confraternity members, and ordinary citizens work side by side for hours, patiently and devoutly arranging flower petals, leaves, and natural materials to prepare the path for the celebration of the Most Holy Sacrament. The result is a spectacle of beauty and spirituality that reconnects the town with its religious traditions.
The event is promoted by the Nuova Pro Loco of Scurcola Marsicana, with the active collaboration of the four local confraternities:
The municipal AVIS of Scurcola-Cappelle, the Festival Committee, and the Scurcolandia association also participate in the organization, demonstrating how the Infiorata has become an event shared by the entire community.
Born in 2024, the Scurcola Marsicana Infiorata has quickly established itself as one of the most evocative events in the local calendar. In a territory like Marsica, rich in popular rites and devotions, the event revives the ancient custom of Corpus Domini floral carpets, widespread in many Abruzzese villages, and brings it back to the center of community life.
The creation of the Infiorata is a spectacle in itself: strolling through the square, you can witness the progressive birth of the floral carpet, while enjoying moments of conviviality at refreshment points set up by volunteers. As evening falls, the illuminated square offers a charming scene, filled with the scent of flowers and the quiet contemplation of the religious festival in the Marsican village.
The return of the Corpus Domini Infiorata to Scurcola Marsicana is expected for 2026, with the Nuova Pro Loco and local confraternities working on the floral carpet in Piazza del Mercato. At the moment, dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the event remains tied to the solemnity of Corpus Domini, which falls in June. It is recommended to check the channels of the Nuova Pro Loco and the Municipality of Scurcola Marsicana for updates.
