Floral carpets and devotional altars for the Eucharistic procession in the Iblean village
In the heart of the Iblean Mountains, in the province of Ragusa, the small town of Monterosso Almo celebrates the solemnity of Corpus Domini each year with one of its most cherished traditions: the infiorate (flower festivals). Following the route of the Eucharistic procession, the streets of the historic center are transformed into authentic, ephemeral works of art, covered in carpets of fresh petals and flowers that fill the village with vibrant colors and fragrances.
Locals with a flair for artistry meticulously craft all manner of floral compositions. The most spectacular highlight is the monumental carpet in Piazza Sant'Antonio, a massive display that draws residents and visitors alike every year. Numerous devotional altars are also set up along the town streets; some are decorated with sacred images molded from bread by the most skilled local housewives, while families display their finest fabrics and drapes from their balconies.
The heart of the celebration is the evening Eucharistic procession, which departs from the Mother Church following the solemn Mass and travels through the main streets of the center: Via Roma, Piazza Sant'Antonio, Via Archimede, and Corso Umberto I. The religious pageant moves slowly over the flower carpets in a climate of quiet reflection and devotion that involves the entire community. The celebrations are organized by the town's two parishes, Maria SS. Assunta and San Giovanni Battista.
Included in the prestigious Most Beautiful Villages in Italy circuit, Monterosso Almo provides an exceptional backdrop for the flower festivals: baroque alleys, historic squares, and the majestic Basilica of San Giovanni Battista, a late Iblean baroque jewel attributed to architect Vincenzo Sinatra. The juxtaposition of ephemeral floral art and monumental architecture makes the Corpus Domini festival a defining event for the town and the entire southeastern Sicily region.
More than just an event, the Corpus Domini flower festivals are a collective ritual that unites generations. From the late-night preparation of the carpets to the choral participation in the procession, the entire population of Monterosso Almo gathers around a tradition that weaves together spirituality, folk art, and a profound sense of belonging.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Monterosso Almo celebrated its traditional Corpus Domini flower festivals with great participation from locals and visitors. Following the solemn 7:30 PM Eucharistic celebration at the Mother Church, the procession began at 8:30 PM, winding through the main streets of the historic center, including Via Roma, Piazza Sant'Antonio, Via Archimede, and Corso Umberto I.
The celebrations were led by Archpriest Don Innocenzo Mascali, accompanied by parish vicar Don Salvatore Giaquinta and Deacon Giovanni Agostini. Along the route, citizens created spectacular floral carpets, including a giant one in Piazza Sant'Antonio, and numerous devotional altars, some decorated with sacred images molded from bread.
Monterosso Almo is located in the Iblean hinterland, in the province of Ragusa. By car, it can be reached via the SS194 and the provincial roads connecting Vizzini, Giarratana, and Chiaramonte Gulfi. The nearest airports are Comiso and Catania-Fontanarossa.
The flower festivals take place on the solemnity of Corpus Domini, between late May and June. The Eucharistic celebration is held in the late afternoon, followed in the evening by the procession along the streets of the historic center.
The event is free and open to everyone. We recommend arriving early to admire the floral carpets and altars before the procession passes through.
