About Corpus Domini Flower Festival

During the Corpus Domini weekend, the village of Villa Santo Stefano in the Amaseno Valley (Frosinone) is adorned with petals. The local community creates an 'infiorata'—a hand-crafted floral carpet that lines the route of the Eucharistic procession through the historic center. Organized by the Santa Maria Assunta parish with the support of the Pro Loco and local associations, this is a celebration of faith and community that blends ephemeral art, folk tradition, and local spirit.

A carpet of petals in the heart of Ciociaria

Every year, for the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the small village of Villa Santo Stefano—home to about 1,500 residents nestled at 222 meters above sea level in the Amaseno Valley, in the province of Frosinone—renews one of the most evocative traditions of the Italian religious calendar: the infiorata. The streets of the historic center are covered in a carpet of colorful petals, hand-laid by volunteers, upon which the Eucharistic procession walks following the Holy Mass.

A community-led celebration

The event is promoted by the Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo parish, the village's collegiate church, coordinated by Father Luigi Ruggeri, with the support of the Villa Santo Stefano Pro Loco and local social and religious groups. Parish groups, catechism families, and local associations work side-by-side to compose the floral designs, while most of the petals are donated by residents and collected at the church of San Sebastiano. As noted by the local press, the infiorata "involves the entire community of Villa Santo Stefano, both on a civic and religious level."

How the celebration unfolds

The model follows the 2025 edition: on the eve of the event, volunteers begin preparing the floral carpet along the streets of the center; in the evening, the Holy Mass at the parish is followed by the traditional Corpus Domini procession, which winds its way across the floral display. On Sunday, the festivities continue with morning masses, Eucharistic adoration, and a final blessing.

  • Sunday masses, Eucharistic adoration, and blessing

The tradition of the Infiorate

Corpus Domini flower festivals are widespread throughout Italy—from Genzano di Roma to Spello—with roots dating back to 17th-century Rome. In Villa Santo Stefano, the scale is intimate and village-focused: not a spectacular competition, but a collective gesture of faith and belonging, which the Pro Loco describes as "a great moment of sharing." Since Corpus Domini is a movable feast linked to the liturgical calendar, the date changes annually, usually falling between late May and June.

Villa Santo Stefano, a village in the Amaseno Valley

The Municipality of Villa Santo Stefano, in southern Lazio, preserves a compact historic center dominated by its tower and the Baroque collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta, which stands on the ruins of an ancient medieval church. The village, also known for the centuries-old tradition of the Panarda linked to Saint Roch and for the Sagra dei Cecapreti e della Bufaletta, experiences the June infiorata as the ideal start to the festive season: an opportunity to discover one of the most authentic villages in Ciociaria, amidst faith, folklore, and hospitality.
