Floral carpets and crochet masterpieces for Corpus Domini, in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival in Gioia dei Marsi, a small town in the Province of L'Aquila nestled within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, is one of the most original religious and artistic events in the entire Marsica area. On the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, Via Alfonso Lamarmora, right in front of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, is covered in a carpet of colors, shapes, and symbols that narrate the mystery of the Eucharist.
What sets this flower festival apart from all others is not the use of fresh flowers, but its textile reinterpretation. The compositions are born from the ancient art of crochet: the local women hand-craft cotton dahlias and flowers, sewing and assembling them into large panels that make up the final work. A labor of painstaking patience that combines artisanal skill with popular devotion, transforming a centuries-old tradition into a unique, recognizable landmark.
The numbers behind the effort speak volumes about the dedication of the local community: nearly thirty square meters of carpet, seven panels dedicated to interpretations of the Eucharistic mystery, over a thousand balls of cotton, thousands of crochet dahlias, dozens of color shades, and hundreds of days of work, all crafted by about forty women from the village.
The festival involves not only the main town but also the hamlet of Casali di Aschi, where decorations are created using sawdust and flower petals in a multitude of shades. These masterpieces are brought to life by the Arte con Gioia association in Gioia dei Marsi and the Pro Loco Vico di Casali di Aschi, with the contribution of many active residents. It is the most authentic expression of a town that chooses to love its roots through action, renewing a ritual every year that weaves together faith, art, and belonging.
Attending the Gioia dei Marsi Flower Festival means discovering a little-known corner of inland Abruzzo, between the mountains of the National Park and the villages of the Marsica. The event, which is free to attend, takes place over a single day and culminates with the Corpus Domini procession, which walks over the floral carpet before it is dismantled: an intense moment where the artwork becomes a shared path of faith for the entire community.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, the streets of Gioia dei Marsi and the hamlet of Casali di Aschi transformed into open-air paintings for the solemnity of Corpus Domini. In Gioia dei Marsi, the Arte con Gioia association created a unique work using the crochet technique, blending artisanal mastery and devotion; in Casali di Aschi, the Pro Loco Vico decorated the streets with sawdust and flower petals in multiple shades.
Mayor Gianluca Alfonsi highlighted the communal value of the initiative: «Innovating within tradition is possible and necessary», reminding us that being a community means loving one's town through actions. The edition was appreciated for its creativity and the variety of techniques, capable of transforming the village streets into true works of art.

Gioia dei Marsi is located in the Province of L'Aquila, on the edge of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (exit at Pescina or Cocullo, then follow provincial roads towards the Giovenco Valley). The nearest train station is in Pescina, on the Rome-Pescara line.
The festival takes place on the day of Corpus Domini, on a Sunday between late May and June. The carpet is laid out along Via Lamarmora, in front of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and remains visible throughout the day until the procession.
The event is free and takes place outdoors.
