Floral carpets in the historic center for the Corpus Domini solemnity
The Corpus Domini Flower Festival is one of the most anticipated and evocative events in Civita Castellana, a town in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. On the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the streets of the historic center are transformed into a vast open-air museum: thousands of petals, leaves, seeds, and bark are arranged with patience and precision to create spectacular floral carpets that line the route of the Eucharistic procession.
Preparing for the flower festival is a true community ritual. For days, and often months, groups of volunteers, associations, families, and artists work on designing sketches and gathering natural materials. On the night before the feast, the master flower artists get to work, laboring until dawn to complete compositions that blend religious subjects, symbols of Christian tradition, and contemporary artistic themes.
Like all forms of ephemeral art, these floral carpets are destined to last only a few hours: as the procession passes, the works are walked upon and slowly dissolve, a characteristic that enhances their charm and makes the work of the artists even more precious.
Corpus Domini celebrates the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, a tradition linked to the Eucharistic miracle that occurred in Bolsena in 1263. As the procession moves through the streets of Civita Castellana's historic center, windows and balconies are adorned with red drapes while the pageant advances over the flower carpets: a moment of intense popular participation and faith that unites the entire community.
Perched on a tuff spur between the ravines of the Agro Falisco, Civita Castellana preserves a historic center rich in history, dominated by the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore with its famous Cosmatesque portico and the imposing Forte Sangallo. Visiting the city on the day of the Flower Festival means discovering an artistic heritage of rare beauty, enhanced by the colors and scents of the floral carpets.
Blending tradition, faith, and creativity, the Corpus Domini Flower Festival continues to be one of the most defining and heartfelt events in Civita Castellana, attracting visitors and enthusiasts from across the province of Viterbo and beyond every year. It is a cultural heritage passed down from generation to generation and a precious opportunity to experience the city's historic center.
The 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026. As per tradition, on the night before, groups of volunteers, associations, and artists composed floral carpets along the streets of Civita Castellana's historic center, alternating religious subjects, Christian symbols, and artistic themes. The works, ephemeral by nature, accompanied the passage of the Eucharistic procession, slowly dissolving under the footsteps of the pageant.
The Flower Festival takes place on the solemnity of Corpus Domini, generally in the second half of June. The floral carpets are created on the night before the feast and remain visible until the procession passes.
