The streets of Bolsena are adorned with petals for the solemnity of Corpus Domini
In the heart of the Tuscia region, overlooking Lake Bolsena, the town of Bolsena (Viterbo province, Lazio) celebrates one of Italy's most evocative and anticipated religious traditions every year: the Corpus Domini Festival with its Eucharistic Miracle Flower Carpets. For the solemnity, the streets of the historic center transform into an open-air museum, where floral carpets made entirely of petals, leaves, and natural materials accompany the passage of the Blessed Sacrament.
The festival is rooted in one of the most famous episodes of Christian devotion. According to tradition, in 1263, a Bohemian priest, Peter of Prague, was experiencing a crisis of faith while celebrating Mass in the Basilica of Santa Cristina. During the consecration, blood reportedly flowed from the host, staining the corporal. That relic, along with the blood-stained altar stonesโthe so-called Sacred Stoneโbecame the tangible sign of the miracle. The following year, in 1264, Pope Urban IV established the feast of Corpus Domini, which has since become one of the most important dates in the Catholic liturgical calendar. The corporal is now kept in the nearby Orvieto Cathedral, while Bolsena remains the site of the miracle and the spiritual center of this devotion.
The heart of the event lies in the floral carpets that cover the procession route, a path about three kilometers long through the historic center and the streets of the Castle district. Hundreds of floral artists of all ages, gathered in groups and families, spend days collecting flowers in the surrounding countryside and composing the designs. The most delicate petals are gathered at dawn on the day of the event to keep their colors vibrant and bright. Yellow, red, and green dominate, while cornflowers provide rare shades of blue. The result is a piece of ephemeral art, destined to last only a few hours until the procession passes.
The highlight is the solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament, which travels along the long floral carpet on the day of the feast, accompanied by the Bolsena Flag-wavers and Musicians. Along with the monstrance, the relic of the Sacred Stone is carried in procession, while the community and numerous visitors follow the pageant along the decorated streets to the Basilica of Santa Cristina. A rich program of initiatives develops around the religious celebration, with historical re-enactments, art and craft exhibitions, concerts, and musical entertainment that bring the village to life throughout the day.
The Corpus Domini Festival is also an opportunity to discover Bolsena and its territory: the medieval village dominated by the Rocca Monaldeschi, the Basilica of Santa Cristina with its early Christian catacombs, and the stunning Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. It is an event that combines faith, art, popular tradition, and landscape, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists to the province of Viterbo every year.
In 2026, the Corpus Domini celebrations in Bolsena were held from May 31 to June 7, with the most anticipated moment on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The streets of the historic center were covered with spectacular floral carpets made with thousands of petals, along a route of about three kilometers. In the evening, the solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament, carrying the relic of the Sacred Stone, traversed the floral carpet accompanied by the Bolsena Flag-wavers and Musicians, leading to the Basilica of Santa Cristina.
The celebrations took place from May 31 to June 7, 2026. On the final day, Sunday, June 7, the floral artists completed the carpets at dawn along the streets of the historic center and the Castle district. In the afternoon, at 6:00 PM, the solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament with the Sacred Stone took place, accompanied by the Bolsena Flag-wavers and Musicians, along the three-kilometer decorated route to the Basilica of Santa Cristina. The program also included historical re-enactments, art and craft exhibitions, concerts, and musical entertainment.
By car: Bolsena can be reached via the Via Cassia (SS2), about 25 km from Viterbo and 40 km from Orvieto. From the A1 motorway, take the Orvieto exit and continue along the lake.
By train: The nearest station is Orvieto (Rome-Florence line), connected to Bolsena by local buses.
Admission to the event and viewing the floral carpets is free. The celebrations take place in the historic center and along the procession route.
We recommend arriving in Bolsena in the early part of the day to admire the creation of the floral carpets before the evening procession. Parking is available outside the historic center, which is closed to traffic during the event.
