The Manocalzati festival of colors, featuring art, creative workshops, and solidarity
ColorDay is the most vibrant event of the summer in Manocalzati, a small town in the Province of Avellino, Campania. The setting is iconic and central to the festival's identity: the tree-lined avenue of Via San Vito, located just outside the town center on the road to Montefalcione, where centuries-old plane trees shade a stage stretching for hundreds of meters. For one full day, this avenue becomes a sprawling workshop where anyone can pick up a brush, some tempera, or a piece of clay.
The formula is simple and stated in the festival's motto: an event for children from 0 to 99 years old. There are no age limits, no separation between audience and stage, and no passive spectators: everyone participates, gets their hands dirty, and leaves covered in color from head to toe.
ColorDay is no amateur event. The first edition dates back to June 3, 2001, when the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Manocalzati decided to open up to the community with an event capable of «bringing the association into the reality of the 3rd millennium», focusing on values of fraternity and local belonging. Nearly twenty-five years later, the festival has become a tradition recognized far beyond the municipal borders, attracting visitors from across Irpinia and other provinces of Campania.
In recent years, the historical organization of the Archconfraternity has been joined by the MOJO Tattoo Crew, a local artistic collective that has introduced the language of illustration, writing, and live art to the festival, refreshing the program without betraying its original spirit.
The program is intentionally packed, designed so that everyone can find their favorite activity. Recurring highlights include:
Alongside the fun, there is a dimension of solidarity that is an integral part of the event. In the morning, the stand of the ONLUS «La Rondinella» association opens: hospital clowns launch a toy drive — strictly for new, sealed toys — to be distributed to children in hospital wards. It is the gesture that completes the event's circle: those who come to have fun bring something to leave for those who cannot be there that day.
The most anticipated moment arrives at the end of the day, when the avenue fills up for the Color Battle: a collective chromatic explosion involving everyone present, which serves as the festival's visual signature. It is the image that goes viral on social media every year and has made ColorDay recognizable throughout the province.
The lunch break is organized in collaboration with local businesses: along the route, you will find food trucks and street food stations, while participating restaurants offer a special ColorDay menu at a promotional price. There are also beverage stands and water distribution points, which are essential on a June or July day spent almost entirely outdoors. A first aid station is active along the avenue for the entire duration of the event.
ColorDay perfectly captures a uniquely Irpinian way of celebrating: a small community organizing itself around a historical association, offering up its most beautiful street and transforming it into a space where art, play, and generosity coexist for a day. For a family visiting Campania, it is also a great excuse to discover the Valle del Sabato and the villages surrounding Manocalzati, just a few kilometers from Avellino.
On Sunday, June 21, 2026, Via San Vito in Manocalzati once again transformed into an open-air stage in the shade of its tree-lined avenue. The edition was curated by the MOJO Tattoo Crew alongside the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Conception, with PROGRESS serving as the premium partner.
The day kicked off at 9 AM with registrations and the distribution of gadgets, art supplies, and event wristbands, before diving into the heart of the action with DJ sets, entertainment, magic shows, a LEGO Area, cosplayers, face painting, clay workshops, and Baby Tattoo stations strictly for those under 18. Live art performances and graffiti live painting were featured throughout the route.
At 10 AM, the stand for the «La Rondinella» ONLUS opened, with hospital clowns collecting new, sealed toys for children in hospital wards. After the 1 PM lunch break — featuring food trucks, street food, and promotional ColorDay menus at participating restaurants — activities resumed at 3:30 PM, leading up to the chromatic explosion of the Color Battle at 6 PM and the event's conclusion at 7 PM.
A first aid station is active throughout the event, and staff are available to assist participants at various stations. The program is subject to change beyond the organizers' control.
Viale San Vito, just outside the town center of Manocalzati (AV), on the road towards Montefalcione. The avenue of centuries-old plane trees hosts the entire event route.
By car: Manocalzati is about 8 km from Avellino, accessible via the Avellino-Salerno motorway junction and the A16 Naples-Canosa highway (Avellino Est exit). By train: the reference station is Avellino, which is then connected by local bus lines. By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about an hour's drive away.
Free event open to everyone. Registration at the entrance is recommended, where you will receive gadgets, art supplies, and the event wristband; a voluntary donation to support charitable initiatives is appreciated.
Wear old clothes or items you don't mind getting colored: the end-of-day color battle spares no one. It is useful to bring a change of clothes, a hat, and a water bottle. For the solidarity drive, toys must be new and still sealed.
