The amateur theater showcase in the medieval village of Sabina
The Collalto Sabino Amateur Theater Festival is the summer showcase that brings one of the most charming villages in the province of Rieti, in northeastern Lazio, to life every year. Established in 2024, the event has grown with each edition, becoming a highly anticipated appointment that draws amateur theater companies and enthusiasts from across the region and nearby Abruzzo to the small town of Collalto Sabino.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, which for the occasion turns into an open-air theater. Performances take place outdoors on summer evenings, with the silhouette of the Baronial Castle providing a natural backdrop. It is an experience that blends the magic of the medieval village—perched at an altitude of nearly a thousand meters with views of the Terminillo and Gran Sasso mountains—with the warmth of the audience filling the square until late at night.
The program is dedicated to amateur theater, featuring a selection of brilliant comedies and works from both classical and contemporary repertoires. Each evening hosts a different company, hailing from Rome and towns across Lazio and the Marche, performing before a jury and the public. The productions range from popular comedy to great traditional authors, from Eduardo De Filippo to Carlo Goldoni, and even contemporary playwrights like Gianni Clementi.
The festival concludes with a final evening dedicated to the awards ceremony, where honors are presented to the companies and performers. The official portion is followed by the traditional "Pizza in piazza", a convivial moment that brings together artists, organizers, and spectators, and has become the festival's signature trademark.
Collalto Sabino, which joined the Borghi più belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) circuit in 2002, provides the perfect setting for a summer evening of theater. The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of Collalto Sabino in collaboration with the Cultural Association "I Scoordinati" APS, with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve. Attending a show here means experiencing the village in its most authentic atmosphere, amidst medieval alleys, crenelated walls, and the typical conviviality of the Sabina region.
The third edition of the Collalto Sabino Amateur Theater Festival, announced by the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Nature Reserve, confirms the formula of open-air evenings in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Four events between late June and late July 2026, all with free admission, featuring amateur companies from Rome and Lazio, and the customary final evening dedicated to awards.
All performances are held in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II starting at 9:30 PM with free admission.
Collalto Sabino is located in the province of Rieti, about 50 km from Rome. By car: take the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway, exit at Carsoli-Oricola, then follow provincial roads toward the village. By train: the Rome-Pescara line serves the valley stations, requiring a car for the final uphill stretch to the historic center.
Performances are held in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II starting at 9:30 PM. Admission is free. We recommend arriving early to secure a seat and parking in the village.
