About Civit'arte

Every July, Civit'arte lights up Civita di Bagnoregio, the famous "dying city," with a series of free evening events that weave together author recitals, philosophy lectures, and debates on current affairs. In the squares of the tufa village and at the Casa del Vento, prominent actors, thinkers, and economists take the stage in a dialogue between the deepest past and a questioning present. It is a major cultural festival in the Upper Tuscia region, in the heart of the Viterbo province and the Lazio region.

A festival in a village suspended in time

Civit'arte is the cultural festival that brings great culture to the alleys of Civita di Bagnoregio every summer, in the municipality of Bagnoregio (Viterbo province), in the Upper Tuscia area of Lazio. Accessible only on foot via a long pedestrian bridge, Civita is known worldwide as the "dying city": a tufa village clinging to a rocky spur, threatened by the erosion of the badlands but capable of being reborn every year through culture. It is in this unique setting that the festival takes place.

Recitals, thought, and current affairs

Civit'arte is not just a simple entertainment program: it is a project that builds bridges "between the deepest past and a questioning present." The evenings combine the depth of theatrical author recitals with the liveliness of debates and conferences, featuring some of the most authoritative actors, philosophers, economists, jurists, and writers on the national scene. The audience listens to masterclasses on philosophy and artificial intelligence, reflections on the Constitution and the ethics of care, and performed biographies of great protagonists of art and thought.

The venues

The events are spread across the most evocative locations in the village and the center of Bagnoregio:

  • Piazza San Donato, the scenic heart of Civita, in front of the church that dominates the town;
  • Piazza del Vescovado, cozy and intimate, ideal for recitals;
  • the Casa del Vento, in Bagnoregio, home to meetings and conferences.

An event supported by the territory

The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Bagnoregio together with Casa Civita, with the support of the Lazio Region, and benefits from the artistic direction of Fabrizio Vona. All events are free of charge, in line with the idea that culture should be a shared good accessible to the entire community. Civit'arte thus represents one of the most prestigious offerings of the cultural summer in Tuscia, capable of attracting a large audience every year and relaunching the image of Civita as a living place, not just a postcard.

Why it's worth it

Attending a Civit'arte evening means experiencing culture in a rare dimension: at sunset, when the tourist buses have left Civita, the village empties and only the silence, the stone, and the voices of the artists on stage remain. It is an intense experience that combines the beauty of the badlands landscape with the power of words, making this festival an unmissable appointment for those who love spoken-word theater and the exchange of ideas.
