The citrus celebration in the heart of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto

In the heart of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, in the province of Messina, Citrus Festival is the event that every November transforms Piazza Duomo into a grand showcase dedicated to citrus fruits. A celebration for everyone, blending culture, tradition, and entertainment, it puts local products and the identity of a community deeply rooted in its land at the forefront.
The event was created to revive the historical importance of citrus fruits for the local economy: from the 19th century until the 1980s, yellow and red oranges and lemons were the true "gold" of this corner of Sicily. Agriculture and livestock remain central to the local economy today, with production of citrus, grapes, olives, vegetables, and beef. Citrus Festival celebrates this heritage, providing a platform for producers, artisans, and young agri-food entrepreneurs.
More than just a food fair, Citrus Festival is an event that combines the promotion of typical products, regional tourism, and social connection. Strolling through the stalls in Piazza Duomo means discovering the flavors and scents of Sicilian citrus, meeting producers from the Barcellona area, and experiencing the town center during one of the most colorful evenings of the Messina autumn.
The event is traditionally held in November, coinciding with the St. Martin's period. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is best to follow the event's Facebook page to stay updated on the calendar and full program.
