Ferragosto in Piazza Leone XIII with cicatielli in braciola sauce and the Palio delle Tradizioni
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Cicatielli and Bread Festival of Montecalvo is one of the longest-running culinary events in Campania. The first edition dates back to August 15, 1974, when it was known as the "Village Festival of the Cicatiello and Ham"; it adopted its current name in 1986, highlighting the bread baked in the town's wood-fired ovens. Since then, every Ferragosto, the festival has been the heart of summer for locals, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The cicatiello (known in dialect as cicatieddru) is a fresh pasta made from the simplest ingredients but requiring great skill: just flour, water, and salt, hand-kneaded and shaped with the thumb into small, ridged gnocchi. While common throughout Irpinia, the version from Montecalvo Irpino has unique characteristics that set it apart. At the festival, it is served primarily with braciola sauce—a slow-cooked veal roll ragù that is the town's signature dish—alongside veal braciole and the famous double-sausage sandwich.
Alongside the festival, the Pro Loco Montecalvo Irpino APS organizes the Palio delle Tradizioni, a competition between local districts and housewives historically divided into three skill challenges: preparing and cooking cicatielli, the pacchiane walk—a parade of women in traditional dress through the historic center, including a philological analysis of the costumes—and traditional folk songs. Participation requires wearing period clothing; the Palio is not an improvised folk show, but a dedicated effort to preserve Montecalvo's collective memory.
The evenings take place in Piazza Leone XIII, where food stalls typically open at 8:00 PM and live music continues late into the night. The lineup is traditionally dedicated to Irpinian ethnic and folk music, including tammurriata and pizzica groups, street bands, and dance parties. Over the years, performers have included the Gruppo Etnomusicale Irpino, the Gruppo di ricerche etnografiche irpine, the Boomerang Orkestra, and numerous local artists. Admission to the evenings is free, while food and drinks are purchased at the stalls.
The Municipality of Montecalvo Irpino is located in the province of Avellino, on the border between Irpinia and the Sannio region of Benevento, set in a landscape of wheat-covered hills dominated by the Pignatelli Ducal Castle and the ancient village. The festival is part of the Pro Loco's "Summer Diary," a calendar of events that brings the town to life around Ferragosto alongside the Bread and Grilled Pizza Festival, finding its counterpart in November with the ancient Saint Catherine Fair.
For summer 2026, the Pro Loco Montecalvo Irpino APS has not yet released the dates and program for the new edition of the festival. The event is historically held on the evenings around Ferragosto, in Piazza Leone XIII, as part of the Pro Loco's "Summer Diary," but until the official calendar is published, all information remains indicative.
Those planning a visit can follow the Pro Loco's social media channels and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, where the program is usually published in the days immediately preceding the event. We will update this page as soon as the 2026 dates are confirmed.
