The signature pastry of Valdina takes center stage with tastings, music, and tradition

The Ciauna Festival is one of the most heartfelt gastronomic events in the small town of Valdina, in the province of Messina, in the heart of the Tyrrhenian side of Sicily. Created in 2013 to showcase a pastry that risked being confined to family kitchens, the festival has grown year after year to become a highly anticipated spring event in Valdina, attracting visitors from across the Niceto Valley and the Messina area.
The absolute star is the ciauna (also known in the local dialect as "ciauna da Valdina"), an ancient sweet linked to the Lenten and Easter period. It consists of a filling made of sheep's milk ricotta, sugar, honey, and cinnamon, encased between two discs of shortcrust pastry and shaped like a medal, often decorated with a small cord. According to tradition, ciauni were eaten starting on Holy Saturday, at the end of the Lenten fast, as a sign of penance. Still prepared today by the skilled hands of the local women and once baked in wood-fired ovens, they are best enjoyed with a glass of Zibibbo, a sweet Sicilian wine.
For two days, the historic center of Valdina transforms into a food and wine trail featuring stalls of artisanal products, tasting stands, and traditional cuisine. The tasting of the ciauna is accompanied by musical performances, singing, and dancing in the square, which enliven the evenings and involve both residents and visitors. There are also moments for cultural enrichment, such as meetings dedicated to the history and preparation of the pastry, conducted over the years with the contribution of Slow Food Valdemone.
The festival is not just about gastronomy: historical initiatives include the "Cittร di Valdina" poetry and fiction competition, aimed at local students, which links the event to the life of the community and its memory. The organization has always involved the Municipal Administration of Valdina together with local associations, including the Pro Loco of Roccavaldina and other local groups, testifying to a festival deeply rooted in the social fabric.
Visiting the Ciauna Festival means discovering an authentic corner of Sicily, far from the most beaten tourist paths, where food becomes a story of a community. Valdina, a village of a few hundred inhabitants overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea between Messina and Milazzo, welcomes visitors with the generosity typical of small Sicilian towns, offering an experience that intertwines flavors, music, and folk tradition.
The 2026 edition of the Ciauna Festival does not yet have an officially confirmed date. The event is usually held in the month of May in the historic center of Valdina, in the province of Messina, with the usual food and wine trail, tastings of the typical pastry, and musical performances in the square. The detailed program will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Valdina is located in the province of Messina, on the Tyrrhenian coast. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Milazzo exit and continuing inland towards Valdina and Roccavaldina. The nearest train station is in Messina, from where you can continue by local transport.
The festival traditionally takes place in May and lasts for two days. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially confirmed.
Entry to the food and wine trail is free; tastings are paid for at individual stands. It is recommended to check the updated program on the "Sagra della Ciauna" Facebook page before departure.
