The Living Stations of the Cross and Passion rites in the historic centre of Cianciana
The Cianciana Holy Week, in the heart of the Agrigento province, is one of the oldest and most well-attended sacred representations in Sicily. Its origins date back to 1870, when the "Mortorio dell'Orioles"—the Redemption of Adam in the Death of Jesus Christ, a work by the Palermitan poet Filippo Orioles—was staged for the first time in the town. For decades, the performance took place indoors throughout Lent until 1940. It was only in 1968 that the Passion moved into the streets and squares of the town, involving the entire community and creating the evocative open-air theatrical form that still attracts visitors from across the island today.
The most intense moment is the Living Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, when the streets of the historic centre transform into a contemporary Jerusalem. Every year, over two hundred people—including actors, extras, technicians, and volunteers—wear period costumes to embody the Gospel scenes: the meeting with Mary, the help of Simon of Cyrene, the gesture of Veronica and the pious women, along a path that symbolically leads to Calvary.
Good Friday begins with the flagellation, the trial of Jesus, and the condemnation; this is followed by the ascent to Calvary and, in the evening, the Holy Hour animated by the confraternity, the deposition from the cross, and the solemn procession of the Dead Christ that winds through the village streets. Holy Saturday is dedicated to visiting the Deposed Christ and moments of prayer during the evocative rites of silence. The route touches the symbolic sites of local religious life: Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the Convent of the Friars Minor, the Church of Sant'Antonino, the Church of the Carmel, the Church of Purgatory, and the Mother Church.
The event is organised by the Associazione Settimana Santa Cianciana APS, which has managed and structured the event since 1994. The association is the only Sicilian entity to belong to Europassione per l'Italia and is part of the European Europassion network, which brings together dozens of communities that stage the Passion of Christ across Europe. This international link confirms the value of the Cianciana tradition as a cultural and identity-defining heritage of the Sicily Region.
In recent years, the event has been enriched with new artistic initiatives that combine popular devotion with contemporary languages such as street art and live painting, making the Cianciana Holy Week an appointment that unites faith, historical memory, and creativity.
The 2026 edition confirmed the strong identity of the Cianciana Holy Week. On Good Friday, April 3, celebrations opened in the morning with the flagellation, the trial, and the condemnation performed at Largo Convento, followed by the Living Stations of the Cross with the most significant scenes of the Passion. In the evening, the Holy Hour animated by the confraternity, the deposition from the cross, and the procession of the Dead Christ through the town streets took place. Holy Saturday, April 4, was dedicated to visiting the Deposed Christ and moments of prayer at the confraternity headquarters.
A new feature for 2026 was the "Street Art Passion - Madonnari at the Stations of the Cross" project, promoted by the Neapolitan School of Madonnari under the artistic direction of Gennaro Troia and with the patronage of the Municipality of Cianciana: fourteen artists interpreted the Stations of the Cross through panel paintings, involving the Madonnari of Sicily, the Salvinian School, and the Neapolitan School.
Cianciana is located in the hinterland of the Agrigento province. By car, it can be reached via the SS 118 (Agrigento-Corleone). The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, about a 90-minute drive away; alternatively, Catania Fontanarossa. The reference railway station is in Agrigento.
Events are concentrated during the days of Holy Week, particularly between Good Friday and Holy Saturday. The date varies each year according to the Easter calendar.
Participation in the performances and processions is free and open to everyone.
Comfortable clothing is recommended for following the Stations of the Cross along the uphill streets of the historic centre. Parking is available in areas outside the town centre.
