The Ciambella Festival is the most anticipated event in the hamlet of San Lucio, a small district in the municipality of Boville Ernica, in the province of Frosinone, southern Lazio. Every year, on the Sunday following March 4th, the community gathers around its patron saint for a day that weaves together faith, rural tradition, and popular joy. It is one of those festivals passed down through generations, capable of attracting not only residents but also many locals returning for the occasion and visitors from across the Ciociaria region.
The festival is dedicated to Saint Lucius, the Roman pope who succeeded Cornelius in 253 AD and who, exiled during the persecutions against Christians, died in early March 254. The hamlet of Boville Ernica that bears his name venerates him as its patron, and it is precisely in the days surrounding his feast day that the entire event comes to life, with the religious ceremony opening the day and the popular festival concluding it.
The delicious and symbolic heart of the day is the distribution of ciambelle and ciambelline, traditional local pastries offered along with wine from the characteristic allegorical floats that parade through the streets of the district. It is an ancient gesture of sharing that transforms the entire hamlet into a large open-air banquet: the ciambella is not bought, it is received, in the name of hospitality and belonging to the village.
The afternoon is enlivened by folk groups and street performers who bring music, traditional Ciociarian dances, and entertainment to the people. There is no shortage of spectacular moments, such as the performances of flag-wavers and the daytime fireworks display, which mark the stages of the celebration. The organization, managed with passion by the festival committee, succeeds every year in renewing the enthusiasm of a deeply rooted tradition.
An ancient village known until 1907 by the name of Bauco, Boville Ernica is a small jewel of the Ciociaria, in Lazio, famous for its historic center enclosed by walls, its churches, and the art treasures kept within its alleys. The San Lucio Ciambella Festival tells the most genuine soul of this territory: that of spring festivals, communities coming together, and traditions that withstand the test of time.
