Living Nativity at the Olive Grove Field, markets at Punta Vreca, and bagpipers in the Amalfi Coast village
With just over six hundred inhabitants and barely one square kilometer of territory, Conca dei Marini is one of the smallest municipalities in Campania, nestled between Amalfi and Praiano in the Province of Salerno. This intimate scale makes its Christmas celebration a unique experience compared to large commercial events: it is not a spectacular, mass-market affair, but a widespread calendar involving churches, the local school, small squares, and the terraces overlooking the sea. The program is developed each year through the collaboration of parish communities, the Municipality of Conca dei Marini, and the Pro Loco, spanning nearly a month from mid-December to the Sundays following Epiphany.
The heart of the event is the living nativity scene set up at the “San Pancrazio” Olive Grove Field, where residents re-enact the Nativity among the olive trees and dry-stone walls that define the agricultural landscape of the Coast. The performance is not limited to a single evening: it takes place on December 23rd and is repeated on January 5th, always at 6:00 PM, when the evening darkness highlights the path's lighting and the silhouette of the gulf visible in the background.
December 23rd brings Christmas markets to Punta Vreca, open from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, featuring stalls with local products and regional street food. It is the most convivial moment of the calendar, when the village fills with visitors arriving from neighboring coastal towns, and where local crafts and gastronomy find a showcase accessible to all.
Religious tradition remains the backbone of Christmas in Conca. From December 16th to 23rd, the novena is celebrated in the Church of Santa Maria di Grado, concluding at dawn on the 23rd with the blessing of the Baby Jesus figurines. Christmas Eve is marked by the bagpipers of the “Aura Natalis” group wandering the village streets and the Midnight Mass in the Church of San Pancrazio Martire, accompanied by the traditional lighting of the bell tower. On Epiphany, and later on the Sunday of the Holy Childhood, the ritual of the “lifting of the Baby Jesus” takes place.
Alongside the rites, the program makes space for village life: the parade of the “Gli amici di Masaniello” folk group, which descends from the Santa Rosa Monastery to Piazza Olmo, the “Benvenuti in zeppolandia” gastronomic contest, the children's drawing competition at the “Luigi Esposito” school, the charity musical bingo, and the solidarity Christmas lunch with the elderly. These moments tell the story of the festival's true nature: above all, a community gathering.
Conca dei Marini is known far beyond its borders for two reasons that intertwine with Christmas. It is the village where, according to tradition, the Santa Rosa sfogliatella was born, created in the conservatory of the Dominican nuns that overlooks the coast. It is also the home of the Emerald Grotto, where an underwater nativity scene has rested a few meters deep since 1964, the subject of a marine procession led by divers: a tradition distinct from the village calendar, but one that completes the Christmas identity of this stretch of the Coast.
The dates to mark are primarily those of the living nativity and the markets; the rest of the calendar, consisting of celebrations, choral concerts, and village events, is spread between mid-December and the first half of January. The village is best explored on foot, among stairways and narrow alleys: it is advisable to arrive early, wear comfortable shoes, and expect a mild but humid climate, typical of winter on the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.
The 2025-2026 edition of Christmas in Conca dei Marini covered nearly a month of events, from December 13, 2025, to January 11, 2026. The program, released in mid-December by parish communities together with the Municipality and the Pro Loco, alternated religious celebrations, public square events, and initiatives dedicated to children and families.
The highlight arrived on December 23rd: from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM at Punta Vreca, Christmas markets were held with street food and local products, while at 6:00 PM the “San Pancrazio” Olive Grove Field hosted the living nativity, which was then repeated on January 5th at the same time. Christmas Eve was entrusted to the bagpipers of the “Aura Natalis” group and the Midnight Mass with the lighting of the San Pancrazio Martire bell tower.
After New Year's, the calendar continued with the parade of the “Gli amici di Masaniello” folk group on January 3rd, from the Santa Rosa Monastery to Piazza Olmo, the charity musical bingo, and the solidarity Christmas lunch with the elderly on January 5th. The closing came with the Epiphany on January 6th and the Sunday of the Holy Childhood on January 11th, both marked by the ritual of the lifting of the Baby Jesus.
Conca dei Marini is located on the SS 163 Amalfitana road, about 4 km from Amalfi and 12 km from Positano. By bus, you can use the SITA Sud Amalfi–Positano–Sorrento line, with stops along the main road near the village. Those traveling by train can get off at Salerno and continue by bus (or, in the summer season, by sea to Amalfi); the reference airports are Naples Capodichino, about 65 km away, and Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, about 50 km away.
Parking spaces along the main road are very limited, and the village is built on stairways and pedestrian alleys: on the days of the markets and the living nativity, it is advisable to arrive early or reach Conca dei Marini by bus from Amalfi.
The Christmas calendar events take place in public spaces and in the village churches; the sources consulted do not indicate any entrance fees. You only pay for what you consume at the local product and street food stalls.
