Chestnut Festival of Trezzano Rosa

A Tradition Over Forty Years Old

The Chestnut Festival is the autumn festival that has enlivened Trezzano Rosa, a municipality in the Martesana area of the Metropolitan City of Milan, for over forty years. Organized by the Pro Loco Il Gelso in collaboration with the municipal administration, the festival traditionally takes place on the third Sunday of October and spans three days (it was in its 47th edition in 2023).

It is one of the most cherished events in the town, also documented by the Ecomuseo Martesana as an intangible heritage of the territory. The chestnut is its symbol: during the festival, roasted chestnuts are offered for free, following a ritual that evokes autumn and conviviality.

Music, Markets, and the District Challenge

The program fills the town for three days with events designed for all ages: music and shows, art exhibitions, rides and attractions, markets, creative workshops, and a fireworks display. The covered gastronomic area offers traditional Milanese and Lombard dishes.

A distinctive element is the challenge between the five districts of the town: the historic race that once concluded the festival has been replaced, for animal welfare reasons, by a competition with carts pulled by district representatives—a sign of how tradition can evolve while keeping its identity alive.
