The cherry blossoms of Val d'Arda between walks, picnics, and food stalls
Cherry trees are the symbol of Villanova sull'Arda, a town in the plains of the Province of Piacenza, in Emilia-Romagna, overlooking the Po River. Along the two banks of the Arda stream and the old course of "Arda Vecchia," in the hamlet of Soarza, lie particularly fertile lands for fruit trees, especially cherry trees. The route from Soarza to Villanova and continuing towards San Pietro in Cerro is known as the "scenic cherry tree road": when in late winter the trees are covered in white and pink blossoms, the spectacle attracts curious visitors and nature lovers from all over the region.
The Cherry Blossom Festival was created to celebrate this bloom and to enhance the town's deep connection with its countryside. Organized by the Pro Loco Villanova sull'Arda, the event takes place over several days between March and April, following the rhythm of nature.
The heart of the festival is the walks among the blooming cherry trees, along the path connecting Villanova to the hamlet of Soarza, with stops in the orchards, refreshment points, and musical accompaniment. The naturalistic aspect is also present: guided walks with experts from the Piacentina Society of Natural Sciences allow visitors to learn about cherry cultivation and the Po River's environment.
The Cherry Blossom Festival is a popular and accessible event, designed for those who love spending a day outdoors amidst nature, good food, and a village atmosphere. It's also an opportunity to discover a little-known corner of Emilia-Romagna, where the Po plain and its orchards tell a story of a still-vibrant agricultural tradition. The Pro Loco also offers side events, such as photography contests dedicated to the beauty of the blossoms.
For 2026, the Cherry Blossom Festival opened on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29, with the new covered marquee hosting the food stalls, and continued on Monday, April 6 (Easter Monday) with a picnic among the cherry trees and Sunday, April 12 with a bike tour to the natural park of Isola Giarola and Lancone. The program combined nature, gastronomy, and festive moments in the orchards of Villanova and the hamlet of Soarza.
Villanova sull'Arda is located in the Piacenza plain, near the Po River. By car, it is accessible from the Via Emilia and from the highway exits in the Fiorenzuola d'Arda and Cremona areas. The hamlet of Soarza, the heart of the orchards, is a few kilometers from the municipal capital.
The festival takes place over several days between late March and mid-April, coinciding with the cherry blossoms, which depend on seasonal weather patterns.
Admission to the festival areas and walks is free; some activities (like picnics and guided practices) require booking. For information: Pro Loco Villanova sull'Arda, tel. 333 7107910, email [email protected].
