The Celebrations in honor of Saint Alexander I, Pope and Martyr represent the most cherished event of the year for the community of Corfinio, a small town in the Province of L'Aquila, in the heart of the Peligna Valley in Abruzzo. Saint Alexander I, a pontiff who lived between 109 and 119 AD, is venerated as the protector of the city: his remains are linked to the Oratory dedicated to him, which stands next to the monumental Valvense Cathedral Basilica of San Pelino.
The element that makes this festival unique is the juniper float parade: allegorical floats entirely covered in juniper branches, which parade through the streets of the town, giving the event an unmistakable charm. This tradition, rediscovered and promoted by the local community with the involvement of the Pro Loco and the Youth Aggregation Center, attracts citizens and visitors every year. The parade typically takes place in the afternoon and is followed by the awarding of the most beautiful floats.
The program combines the religious dimension with the popular one. The celebrations open with the firing of firecrackers and the ringing of bells, followed by the marching band touring the village streets, the Solemn Holy Mass, and the procession with the venerated image of the Patron Saint. The day of the solemnity is dedicated to moments of intense spirituality, with Holy Mass, the Holy Rosary, the singing of vespers, and the traditional kissing of the relic.
The evenings are enlivened by food stalls featuring typical Abruzzo flavors and by the lyrical-symphonic band concert, which over the years has featured prominent local bands and orchestras. The festival thus becomes an occasion for meeting and conviviality for the entire Peligna Valley.
Hosting this festival is a source of great pride for Corfinio: the village stands on the ancient Corfinium, capital of the league of Italic peoples who rose up against Rome. The Valvense Cathedral Basilica of San Pelino, with the Oratory of Saint Alexander, has been a national monument since 1902 and constitutes one of the most precious Romanesque testimonies in Abruzzo. Visiting Corfinio during the festivities means immersing yourself in a centuries-old tradition, amidst devotion, history, and landscape.
The 2026 edition of the Celebrations in honor of Saint Alexander I in Corfinio has not yet been officially scheduled at the time of this publication. The patronal feast usually takes place in the first days of May, coinciding with the solemnity of the Patron Saint. The traditional elements are expected to return: the parade of allegorical floats covered in juniper, the procession with the image of the saint, the marching band, food stalls, and the band concert. For final dates and the program, please consult the official channels of the Municipality of Corfinio and the Saint Alexander I Parish.
Corfinio is located in the Peligna Valley, in the Province of L'Aquila. By car: take the Pratola Peligna-Sulmona exit on the A25 motorway, then follow the signs for Corfinio. By train: the Corfinio-Pentima station is served by the Rome-Pescara line.
The festivities and the juniper float parade take place in the town center and are free and open to the public.
We recommend checking the updated dates and program with the Municipality of Corfinio or the Saint Alexander I Parish. Do not miss a visit to the Valvense Cathedral Basilica of San Pelino.
