About Cecafumo Fest

Cecafumo Fest is a neighborhood music festival promoted by the Scuolaorchestra Social Promotion Association, the organization behind the historic Banda Cecafumo of Quadraro. Born in the heart of Rome's Municipio VII, between Via Tuscolana, the Acquedotto Felice, and Cinecittà, the project brings live music to public squares and spaces with free concerts, workshops, and participatory events for all ages, in an area that has made popular culture its true identity.

A festival born from the neighborhood

The Cecafumo Fest takes its name from one of the most authentic toponyms in the historic outskirts of Rome: the Cecafumo, the area between Via Tuscolana and the Acquedotto Felice, halfway between Quadraro and Cinecittà in Municipio VII. It is here, in the Municipality of Rome and the heart of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in Lazio, that the Scuolaorchestra Social Promotion Association has been operating for years. This organization created the Banda Cecafumo, a self-managed and self-funded wind ensemble that brings together professional musicians, students, workers, and retirees.

Street music, not stage music

The project's hallmark is simple and recognizable: music leaves the rehearsal rooms to occupy public space. Largo Spartaco, the pedestrian area that hosts the historic local market of Cecafumo, is the symbolic site of this practice. Over the years, it has hosted open-air concert-shows, band parades, and evenings dedicated to film scores, accompanied by projections of images behind the orchestra. A format that succeeds in speaking to an intergenerational audience, without price or language barriers.

The repertoire

The repertoire of the Banda Cecafumo, which forms the backbone of the festival, spans different genres and geographies:

  • Film scores from Italian and international cinema, with a special focus on the legacy of Cinecittà;
  • Folk and traditional music, from Balkan dances to Irish and Scottish tunes;
  • Italian songs rearranged for a brass band ensemble;
  • Marches and classical band repertoire, also performed in a marching formation.

A project supported by Rome Capital

Cecafumo Fest was selected as part of the public call «Roma Creativa 365. Cultura tutto l'anno», the initiative through which Rome Capital and Zètema Progetto Cultura support the city's widespread cultural programming. The project, presented by the Scuolaorchestra Social Promotion Association, appears in the ranking of Section 1, subsection 1A «Roma tutto l'anno», with a score of 60/100. This is an important recognition for a grassroots initiative, confirming the Capitol administration's desire to value cultural experiences rooted in neighborhoods outside the historic center.

The context: Quadraro and Cinecittà

To understand Cecafumo Fest is to know the territory that expresses it. Quadraro is one of Rome's most distinctive neighborhoods: awarded a gold medal for civil merit for the Nazi roundup of April 17, 1944, it is now also known for its open-air street art museum and a particularly vibrant community fabric. A few steps away are the Cinecittà studios, the Parco degli Acquedotti, and the Via Tuscolana immortalized by post-war Italian cinema. The festival fits into this tapestry, restoring music's role as a social glue rather than mere entertainment.

Why it's worth it

Those looking for the Rome of grand productions will find their festival elsewhere. Those who want to understand how a Roman neighborhood lives and sounds—with its squares, its market, and its associations—will find a sincere, free, and open event here: a festival that asks for nothing but to listen and, if possible, to dance.
