The grassroots Carnival parade winding through the historic center of Catania
The Catania Social Carnival is one of the most vibrant and defining events of the Carnival season in the Etna capital. Born from the desire to bring the ancient folk festival back to the streets and return it to the citizens, it is a free, grassroots parade that traverses the heart of Catania's historic center. Unlike institutional Carnivals, there are no floats to admire passively here: the Social Carnival is a collective artistic act where residents take part personally, crafting costumes, playing music, dancing, and performing along the route.
The event is promoted by the Gammazita Association, a cultural and social hub in Catania, together with a network of numerous local groups and associations: from street bands to circus schools, from folk dance groups to civil society organizations. This choral dimension is the event's hallmark, described by the organizers themselves as a true practice of active citizenship, founded on community and inclusion.
The parade starts from via Etnea, near the entrance to Villa Bellini, and winds through the main squares of the center: piazza Stesicoro, piazza Università, and piazza Duomo, before continuing towards via Garibaldi, piazza Mazzini, and concluding in the Castello Ursino area, at piazza dei Libri. Along the way, musical performances, dances, juggling, circus shows, and creative interventions by the participating groups alternate in a festive atmosphere that involves both residents and visitors.
Each edition revolves around a theme that serves as a common thread for costumes and performances. Masks, folk music, Afro-Brazilian dances, street bands, and circus arts compose a colorful mosaic that tells the story of the city and its inhabitants in an ironic and creative way. Admission is completely free, and participation is open to anyone who wishes to join with a costume, an instrument, or simply a festive spirit.
Included in the event calendar of the Municipality of Catania, the Social Carnival represents one of the most authentic expressions of Carnival in the province of Catania and Sicily, capable of combining folk tradition, social commitment, and street art. It is a precious opportunity to experience Catania's historic center during a day of collective, free, and inclusive celebration.
The eleventh edition of the Catania Social Carnival was held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, starting at 4:00 PM from via Etnea, at the entrance to Villa Bellini. The theme, "Giù la maschera!", inspired by the 16th-century Commedia dell'Arte, served as the common thread for costumes and performances.
The parade passed through piazza Stesicoro, piazza Università, piazza Duomo, via Garibaldi, and piazza Mazzini, concluding in the Castello Ursino area, at piazza dei Libri. The day's highlights included circus performances, juggling, masked dances, street bands, and the "lazzi" (comic gags) of the traditional comedy, animated by local groups such as AcroYoga Catania, Arcigay Catania, Circo Midulla, Sambazita, and many others. Admission was free and open to all.
The parade takes place on a single day during the Carnival period (between February and March, depending on the annual calendar), usually on a Sunday afternoon, starting in the late afternoon.
Historic center of Catania, starting from via Etnea (Villa Bellini entrance) and arriving in the Castello Ursino area (piazza dei Libri).
The area is easily reachable on foot from the central station of Catania and the main subway stops (Stesicoro and Giovanni XXIII). It is recommended to leave your car in peripheral parking lots and reach the center by public transport, given the road closures in the affected areas.
The event is completely free and open to everyone's participation.
