A village carnival featuring masks, music, and treats in the medieval heart of Garfagnana
In the heart of winter, when the peaks of the Garfagnana are dusted with snow, the medieval village of Castiglione di Garfagnana (Lucca province, Tuscany) transforms into a lively carnival stage. The Castiglione and Chiozza Carnival is a grassroots festival born from local tradition and passionately maintained by the Pro Loco Castiglione Garfagnana: there are no massive floats here, just the genuine warmth of a community gathering in the square to celebrate together in costume and high spirits.
The most charming feature of this carnival is its dual nature, involving both the main town and one of its most beloved hamlets. The first event takes place in the picturesque Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, nestled within the stone walls and houses of the historic center of Castiglione: here, the afternoon fills with masks, music, stalls, and plenty of fun. The second event moves to the hamlet of Chiozza, where music, games, and entertainment turn the small village into a grand party for families.
Like any self-respecting carnival, the absolute star is the food. At the stalls set up in the square, you can sample fried bomboloni, steaming hot chocolate, mulled wine, and punchโperfect for warming up during the cold Apennine days. The festival concludes with the most anticipated moment: the awards ceremony for the three best costumes, celebrating the creativity and effort of adults and children dressed up for the occasion.
Children and adults are invited to join in costume and dress according to the festival's theme. The atmosphere is that of old-fashioned village celebrations: spontaneous, welcoming, and suitable for all ages. It is the ideal opportunity to experience the most authentic side of the Garfagnana, a valley that preserves traditions and rhythms far removed from mass tourism.
Visiting Castiglione di Garfagnana means immersing yourself in one of the best-preserved fortified villages in the province of Lucca, with its medieval walls, entrance gates, and fortress. Participating in the carnival is also a way to discover this corner of the Apennine Tuscany, away from the classic tourist destinations, in the company of the locals.
The 2026 edition offered two afternoons of festivities organized by the Pro Loco Castiglione Garfagnana, involving both the main town and the hamlet of Chiozza with a program designed for families and children.
Castiglione di Garfagnana can be reached by car via the SR445 of the Garfagnana; it is about 50 minutes from Lucca. By train, the reference station is Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (Lucca-Aulla line), a few kilometers away, from which you can continue by bus or car. The hamlet of Chiozza is located a short distance from the main town.
The festival is held during the carnival period (February), with one event in Castiglione and one in Chiozza over the weekend.
Open-air event with free admission; food and drinks available for purchase at the stalls. For information: Pro Loco Castiglione Garfagnana, tel. +39 347 6445002, email [email protected].
