In the heart of the Aniene Valley, just a few kilometers from Tivoli and Rome, the Municipality of Castel Madama celebrates its Castellano Carnival every year, one of the village's most cherished traditions. For a full day, the historic center fills with masks, confetti, and music, drawing families and visitors from across the Tiburtine area of Lazio.

The Parade of Allegorical Floats

The highlight of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, meticulously crafted by the local districts and associations. Alongside the floats, masked groups, performers, and street artists march through the streets, while music accompanies the procession along the main thoroughfares toward Piazza Dante and Piazza Garibaldi, the heart of the festivities. The striking costumes, imaginative masks, and joyful atmosphere make this day one of the most anticipated winter events in the area.

A Festival for the Whole Community

The Castel Madama Carnival is above all a participatory event, brought to life by local organizations: the Pro Loco of Castel Madama, ASD Play, the Flag-wavers and musicians of Castel Madama, and the various town districts. A special focus is placed on the little ones, with entertainment, games, and activities designed specifically for children and teenagers.

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore Castel Madama, a medieval village in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital overlooking the Aniene Valley. Its historic center, dominated by the Orsini Castle, offers picturesque views and a tradition of hospitality that shines during the Carnival, with local flavors and the warmth of the locals.

When It Takes Place

The Castellano Carnival is held annually during the Carnival season, between late January and February. The main parade typically takes place on Sunday afternoon, while further festivities continue to animate the community until Shrove Tuesday, when Piazza Dante becomes the main gathering point for all ages.
