A weekend to discover the monuments, churches, and museums of the historic center of Casale Monferrato
Casale Città Aperta is the format through which the Municipality of Casale Monferrato, in the heart of the Monferrato region in the Province of Alessandria (Piedmont), opens its most representative monuments, churches, and museums to the public. The initiative, promoted by the Department of Culture and the Civic Museum together with the Orizzonte Casale Association, returns every month on the second weekend, but in March it is enriched by a special edition designed to accompany the National San Giuseppe Exhibition, the commercial and popular event that brings the city to life.
The symbol of the event is the Castello del Monferrato, the imposing hexagonal fortress that dominates the center: during the opening, you can walk along the ramparts, climb inside the towers, and visit the exhibitions set up in the halls. Next to the castle, the route touches some of the places most loved by the locals:
For those who want to delve deeper, the Civic Museum and Gipsoteca Bistolfi, dedicated to the symbolist sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi, and the precious complex of the Synagogue and Jewish Museums, a testament to the historic Casale Jewish community, remain open for a fee.
The special March edition was created to engage with the National San Giuseppe Exhibition, a traditional event that brings exhibitors, stalls, and a festive atmosphere to the city, often accompanied by the Sunday antiques market. Visiting the monuments in this setting means combining the discovery of the historical-artistic heritage of Casale Monferrato with the charm of a city festival day.
A large part of the openings is free, and the initiative is enriched by a free guided walk led by volunteers from the Orizzonte Casale Association, which accompanies visitors on Sunday afternoons to discover the main monuments of the historic center. It is the ideal opportunity to get to know Casale Monferrato at the slow pace of those who walk and listen to the stories of the city.
For the special edition of March 14-15, 2026, linked to the National San Giuseppe Exhibition, Casale Monferrato reopened its iconic sites, expanded compared to the regular editions with the complex of the Synagogue and Jewish Museums. The program confirmed the proven formula: monuments and churches visitable for free, museums for a fee, and accompaniment by volunteers from the Orizzonte Casale Association.
On the weekend in March dedicated to the National San Giuseppe Exhibition, Saturday and Sunday. The regular monthly openings are held on the second weekend of each month.
