The masquerade party for families and children at the Auditorium in Atena Lucana Scalo
In the winter calendar of the Municipality of Atena Lucana, in the province of Salerno, the Carnival of Wonders holds a special place. Rather than a traditional parade of floats through the streets, it is a large indoor celebration built around the children and families of the Vallo di Diano. The event takes place at the “Attilio Cirillo” municipal auditorium in Atena Lucana Scalo, which for one full day sheds its usual skin to become a colorful and surprising world populated by superheroes, princesses, and fantasy characters.
The formula is simple and generous: arrive in the morning and stay until late afternoon, without the rush typical of shorter events. The hall is decorated for the occasion, and the program alternates between music, dancing, games, and activities designed to engage all ages, with entertainers guiding the little ones while leaving room for adults in costume. It is a concept that works perfectly even when February weather is unkind: indoors, the Carnival fears no rain.
The most anticipated moment of the day is the costume parade, a true showcase dedicated to the creativity of the participants. Children and families parade before the public, and the most beautiful and original costumes are awarded in a cheerful, festive atmosphere. Those who have sewn or assembled their own costumes at home find their stage here: it is the part of the party that inspires families every year to prepare masks, capes, and accessories well in advance.
Lunch is an integral part of the experience, enjoyed together in the auditorium with traditional Carnival dishes: lasagna, cutlets, and the essential chiacchiere—the fried, sugar-dusted pastries that are a staple of this time of year in Campania. Throughout the day, the hall fills with the scent of popcorn and cotton candy, while children dance alongside Mickey and Minnie Mouse mascots. The underlying idea is that of a community celebration where people eat, play, and spend time together in the same space.
The Carnival of Wonders was created by Insieme Società Cooperativa Sociale Onlus, an organization based in Atena Lucana coordinated by Dr. Alessia Monzillo, in collaboration with the Pro Loco Athena Nova. The cooperative works year-round in the Vallo di Diano area, providing services for minors, families, the elderly, and people with disabilities, and brings this same approach to the festival: an event open to everyone, where dressing up and sharing are tools to create opportunities for connection. This is no small detail: the inclusive dimension is what distinguishes this Carnival from purely recreational initiatives.
Atena Lucana is a small town in Campania overlooking the Vallo di Diano, the wide plain that separates the Alburni Mountains from the ridges marking the border with Basilicata. The historic center, of ancient origin, is distinct from the lower hamlet of Atena Lucana Scalo, which grew along the main transport routes and houses the municipal auditorium. This location makes the town easily accessible from all the municipalities in the district, from Sala Consilina to Polla, from Sant'Arsenio to Padula: the Carnival of Wonders attracts families from a much wider area than just the municipal territory.
The event is scheduled for the highlight of the Carnival season: in 2026, it was held on Tuesday, February 17 (Shrove Tuesday), from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Participation requires advance registration via an online form, with a contribution that includes lunch. It is advisable to follow the social media channels of the Insieme cooperative and the Pro Loco Athena Nova to stay updated on dates and registration procedures for future editions.
