The Carnival parade in the hamlet of Fanano Bassa
The Carnevale a Gradara is one of the most anticipated events of winter in the hamlet of Fanano Bassa, within the Municipality of Gradara, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino (Marche). It does not take place in the famous medieval village dominated by the Rocca, but in Fanano itself, where for over a decade the local community has gathered to celebrate with floats, masks, and lots of cheer.
The heart of the celebration is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups that winds through the streets of Fanano Bassa. The floats, built by volunteers and local associations, move along accompanied by costumed groups, while candies and sweets rain down on the children crowding the roadside. It is a simple and genuine parade, far from large tourist events, which retains the authentic flavour of village festivals.
The Gradara Carnival is above all a celebration for families and children. In addition to the candy throwing, recent editions have featured a mini-train for the little ones, entertainment, live music, and fun throughout the afternoon. The atmosphere is that of Marche popular traditions, with a strong rooting in the community's life.
The event is promoted by the Circolo Auser of Fanano together with the Pro Loco of Gradara and with the patronage of the Municipality of Gradara, with the valuable contribution of volunteers and the Forum of Local Associations. Participation is free and open to all.
The Carnival is usually held on a Sunday afternoon during the Carnival period, in Fanano Bassa, with the parade starting in the early afternoon. It is an opportunity to discover a more popular and familiar side of Gradara, alongside the charm of its historic village and the Malatestian Rocca.
The 11th edition of the Gradara Carnival was held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, starting at 2:30 PM in Località Fanano Bassa. The festival featured the traditional parade of allegorical floats and masked groups with candy throwing, accompanied by entertainment and music with Omnia Live (Rocco and Laura). The organisation was handled by the Circolo Auser of Fanano, the Pro Loco of Gradara, and the Municipality of Gradara. Free admission.
Gradara is located in the far north of the Marche region, near the border with Emilia-Romagna. By car: take the Cattolica-San Giovanni-Gattolica exit on the A14 motorway, then follow signs for Gradara and the hamlet of Fanano. The nearest train station is Cattolica-San Giovanni-Gabicce, a few kilometres away.
The parade takes place in Località Fanano Bassa, a hamlet of the Municipality of Gradara (PU).
The event is free and open to all.
