The traditional Ladin carnival of Val Fiorentina
In Selva di Cadore, in the province of Belluno, the Carneval inte Selva is one of the most authentic expressions of the Ladin culture of Val Fiorentina. Tradition, according to local accounts, dates back to the years after the First World War, around 1922, when the carnival arrived in the valley through the Forcella Forada from San Vito.
The ritual begins with the gathering of the masks in Pescul, from where the parade starts towards Santa Fosca. The traditional masks lead the procession, including the Matazìgn and the King of the Forest, accompanied by accordion music and the sound of cowbells announcing the arrival of the village carnival from town to town.
Organized by the Pro Loco Val Fiorentina, Carneval inte Selva is much more than a masked festival: it is an identity heritage that the small Ladin community of the villages of Selva di Cadore preserves and renews every year, amidst dances, costumes, and centuries-old traditions at the foot of the Dolomites.
The 2026 edition of Carneval inte Selva was held on January 25th in Selva di Cadore. With the gathering of masks in Pescul in the early afternoon and the parade towards Santa Fosca, the Ladin carnival of Val Fiorentina re-enacted its traditional characters and its procession of music and dances, in the spirit of a centuries-old tradition preserved by Pro Loco Val Fiorentina.
