The itinerant rite of the maggianti among the villages of the Parma Apennines
The Cantamaggio in Alta Valtaro and Valceno is one of the most heartfelt popular traditions of the Parma Apennines. Between April 30th and May 1st, the villages of the Taro and Ceno Valleys, in the heart of the province of Parma in Emilia-Romagna, come alive with the singing of the maggianti (or maggerini): groups of singers who, accompanied by the accordion and traditional instruments, walk through the streets of the towns from house to house, singing stornelli, serenades, and rhymes.
Cantamaggio has its roots in peasant culture and is a propitiatory rite that greets the end of winter and celebrates the awakening of nature. During the tour of houses and hamlets, the maggianti receive symbolic gifts from the earth in return — eggs, bread, genuine products — according to a custom that renews the bond between communities and the seasons. It is a participatory festival, open to anyone who wishes to join the choir.
The peculiarity of this edition is its itinerant nature, involving multiple Municipalities of the Union of Municipalities Valli Taro and Ceno:
Spread across many valleys in Emilia-Romagna and surrounding areas, Cantamaggio represents a precious intangible heritage that the communities of the Parma mountains preserve and pass down. Participating means immersing oneself in an authentic atmosphere, made of voices, accordions, and conviviality, far from mass tourist circuits.
On April 30, 2026, Cantamaggio enlivened the Val Ceno: in Pellegrino Parmense, the meeting was set for 6:00 PM at the Sports Field, with the itinerant route through the village streets filled with songs and joy, concluded by dinner at the Baita degli Alpini. In Bardi, from 9:30 PM, the Bardigiano Cantamaggio enlivened the village streets. On May 1st, the celebrations moved to Anzola di Bedonia, with traditional songs accompanied by the accordion, Mass, community arrival, and refreshments from the late afternoon, followed by live music and ballroom dancing with Paolo Bertoli, open to all.
Varsi and the Cantamaggio villages can be reached by car from the A15 motorway (Parma-La Spezia), Fornovo exit, continuing along the Val Ceno; or from the SS308 towards Bardi. Bedonia is also served by the Pontremolese railway line (Bedonia station).
On April 30th, the celebrations reach Varsi, the hamlets of Val Lecca, Pellegrino Parmense (meeting at 6:00 PM at the Sports Field), and Bardi (from 9:30 PM). On May 1st, the event is in Anzola di Bedonia, with refreshments from the late afternoon.
Participation in Cantamaggio is free. For dinners and any convivial moments (such as dinner at the Baita degli Alpini in Pellegrino Parmense), it is advisable to inquire with the local Pro Loco tourist offices.
