Theatre, dance, music, and visual arts in the courtyards and gardens of the Royal Palace in Naples
The Campania Teatro Festival is the leading performing arts event in the Campania region and one of the largest in Italy. Established in 2008 as the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia, it is organized by the Fondazione Campania dei Festival with funding from the Campania Region and support from the Ministry of Culture. The artistic direction is entrusted to playwright and director Ruggero Cappuccio, who has turned the festival into a grand choral narrative that spans prose theatre, dance, music, literature, and visual arts over the course of a month.
Although it is a widespread festival reaching dozens of locations across Campania, its focal point remains the Royal Palace of Naples, overlooking Piazza del Plebiscito in the San Ferdinando district. Here, the Bourbon palace opens its monumental spaces to the public, transforming them into open-air venues: the Carriage Courtyard, the terrace overlooking the Romantic Garden, and Vico Mauriello, which houses photographic exhibitions. Watching a performance under the stars, with the illuminated palace facades behind you and the Gulf of Naples nearby, is perhaps the most iconic experience of the Neapolitan summer.
The program is organized into sections that run concurrently every evening, allowing visitors to create their own unique paths:
Surrounding the palace, the festival involves some of the most renowned Neapolitan performance venues: the Teatro Mercadante in Piazza Municipio, the Teatro Nuovo, Sala Assoli, Teatro Tedér, and Teatro Politeama. The festival also extends to the rest of Campania, with events in the provinces of Benevento, Salerno, Caserta, and Avellino: a model of a widespread festival that connects the regional capital to the villages and inland areas.
When the evening performances end, the day is not over: the terrace overlooking the Romantic Garden hosts the Dopofestival, an informal late-night gathering featuring live music, DJ sets, artist meet-and-greets, and stand-up comedy. It is the moment when the audience, actors, and companies mingle, making the Campania Teatro Festival a true community hub rather than just a performance schedule.
One of the most appreciated features of the event is its pricing policy: full-price tickets cost 8 euros, with a reduced rate of 5 euros for those under 30 and over 65, while exhibitions at the Royal Palace are free of charge. This is a deliberately popular choice, designed to make high-level international programming accessible to everyone.
The location is an added value: from the Royal Palace, you can walk to Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto I, the San Carlo Theatre, Via Toledo, and Via Chiaia, as well as the Via Partenope waterfront. Visitors arriving for a show will find historic cafes, pizzerias, and trattorias in the city center just a few steps away: a natural opportunity to combine an evening at the theatre with a stroll through the monumental heart of the city.
From June 12 to July 12, 2026, the Campania Teatro Festival traversed Naples and the Campania region with over 150 events, approximately 105 performances, and about 50 absolute premieres, distributed across nine sections: Italian, international, observatory, special projects, music, dance, literature, and exhibitions. The theme chosen by Ruggero Cappuccio, in his tenth year as artistic director, was “Universe of Peace”, the declared common thread of the entire program.
As per recent tradition, the heart of the event was the Royal Palace: the Carriage Courtyard and the terrace overlooking the Romantic Garden hosted the bulk of the evening program, while Vico Mauriello welcomed free-entry photographic exhibitions. Surrounding the palace were the Teatro Mercadante, Teatro Nuovo, Sala Assoli, Teatro Tedér, and Teatro Politeama, in addition to decentralized venues throughout the region, from Sannio to Cilento.
The opening was entrusted to the Beckett-Pinter diptych Krapp's Last Tape / Press Conference, featuring Renato Carpentieri directed by Roberto Andò, performed on June 12 and 13 at the Teatro Mercadante. In the following weeks, concerts, prose performances, and dance evenings alternated, with an affordable ticket policy that confirmed the festival's inclusive vocation.
The full program, divided into nine sections and over 150 events between Naples and other provinces of Campania, was published on the official website campaniateatrofestival.it.
