Calcata Ecofestival

A festival dedicated to ecology in the heart of Tuscia

The Calcata Ecofestival is an event focused on ecology and ecotourism held every September in the charming village of Calcata, perched on a tuff spur in the Treja Valley, in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. Born from a project by the Municipality of Calcata in collaboration with the Il Granarone association, local stakeholders, and residents, the festival transforms the streets, squares, and courtyards of the historic center into a widespread journey of encounters, art, and nature for three days.

A village reborn through sustainability

Calcata is a unique place: a small medieval village that bears the marks of the abandonment it suffered in the 1930s, only to be reborn in the 1960s thanks to the arrival of artists, artisans, and communities seeking a more sustainable lifestyle. This very vocation makes the town the ideal setting for a festival that reflects on the relationship between the individual, society, and the habitat, and which, in its various editions, has explored themes such as the bond between humanity, architecture, and the landscape.

Walks, workshops, and local culture

The program combines nature and culture with a multidisciplinary approach designed for all ages:

• Guided walks and hikes in the Treja Valley Park, exploring archaeology, biodiversity, and the landscape;
• Creative and artistic workshops for children and adults, ranging from painting to material reuse;
• Theatrical and musical performances in the village spaces and at Il Granarone;
• Organic and artisanal market featuring zero-mile products and local businesses;
• Tastings and meetings dedicated to conscious eating and the typical products of the Tuscia region.

A community gathering

The Calcata Ecofestival is not just a series of events, but a community moment that brings together residents, associations, and visitors around themes of the environment and sustainability. Most activities are free to attend, while limited-capacity workshops require booking. Thanks to its proximity to Rome—about an hour away—the festival has become a popular destination over the years for those seeking a September weekend defined by nature, art, and the slow pace of village life.
