The Nativity comes to life between the village and the Sanctuary of Monte Taburno, in the heart of Sannio
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
During the Christmas season, Bucciano, a small town of just under two thousand inhabitants in the province of Benevento, in the heart of the Sannio region, becomes the stage for one of the most intimate representations in inland Campania: the Living Nativity organized by the San Giovanni Battista parish community. This is not a theatrical performance, but a walking path where the Nativity is reconstructed with costumed actors, ancient crafts, and meticulously detailed scenes.
The village is located at an altitude of 276 meters on the southern side of Monte Taburno, within the Taburno-Camposauro Regional Park: a landscape of olive groves, woods, and trails that, in winter, gives the event a light and silence hard to find elsewhere.
The representation is designed as a guided tour: you walk along a path marked by living tableaux, accompanied by actors who animate the Nativity settings. The atmosphere is intentionally sober and spiritual, closer to popular devotion than to a show: the lights are soft, the scenes follow one another without haste, and the public proceeds calmly, stage by stage.
Over the years, the nativity has changed its setting. For the 2025 Epiphany, the San Giovanni Battista Parish set it up along Via San Giovanni, in the town center; in December 2025, the representation moved to the setting of the Sanctuary of Maria SS. a Monte Taburno, at the foot of the mountain.
The sanctuary, at an altitude of 544 meters, is a place dear to the hearts of the people of Bucciano. Tradition links it to 1401, when a deaf-mute girl, Agnese Pepe, reportedly saw the Virgin Mary in a cave; the building was later erected at the end of the 15th century thanks to Carlo Carafa. After a long period of neglect, it was restored and reopened in 2007; today it belongs to the Diocese of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant'Agata de' Goti and is entrusted to the care of the Bucciano parish. Hosting the living nativity here means uniting two devotions: the Marian one, which attracts pilgrims from the Valle Caudina every year, and the Christmas one.
The path is not just visual. Along the stages, visitors can stop for tastings of local products, so that faith, tradition, and the flavors of the territory intertwine in a single experience. It is a common trait of the Sannio living nativities, a land of oil, wine, cheeses, and festive sweets.
As in many villages of the Campanian Apennines, the Bucciano living nativity is a collective project: costumes, sets, actors, and hospitality are born from the volunteer work of the parish and the inhabitants. For a town of this size, it is also the moment when the community comes together, often with more than one performance during the same festive period: one on the pre-Christmas weekend, another around Epiphany.
Bucciano is part of a very rich circuit: in the Benevento area, there are dozens of living nativities between the end of December and January 6th, from Morcone (the famous ยซNativity within the Nativityยป) to Faicchio, Pietrelcina, Cerreto Sannita, Castelvenere, and Beltiglio di Ceppaloni. Those arriving in the area can therefore build a multi-day itinerary, with Bucciano as an intimate and scenic stop.
At the moment, no official calendar has been published for the Bucciano Living Nativity for Christmas 2026. The performance, organized by the San Giovanni Battista Parish community, is usually announced a few weeks in advance, often around mid-December, through the social media channels of the parish and the Sanctuary of Maria SS. a Monte Taburno, as well as the local Sannio press.
Those wishing to plan their visit can keep in mind what happened previously: in December 2025, the nativity took place over two days, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a 3-euro entrance fee, parking at the sports field, and a free shuttle to the sanctuary; for the 2025 Epiphany, the representation was set up along Via San Giovanni, in the town center. However, none of these details are confirmed for 2026.
We will update this page with dates, times, route, and prices as soon as the organizers make them public.
Bucciano is located in the Sannio region, about 20 km from Benevento and about 40 km from Naples, on the southern side of Monte Taburno. It can be easily reached by car through the Valle Caudina, following the signs for Airola and Moiano.
For the representation at the sanctuary, a parking area was set up at the sports field, with a free shuttle to go up to the Sanctuary of Maria SS. a Monte Taburno: a recommended solution, given that the access road is narrow and uphill.
In the December 2025 edition, the entrance fee was 3 euros. For information and updates: +39 349 7315159.
