The Epiphany bonfire at Forte Gisella, a centuries-old Veronese tradition
Brusa la Vecia is one of the most cherished traditions of Epiphany in Verona. On the evening of January 6th, at the Curves of Forte Gisella, in the Santa Lucia district of Verona, a large propitiatory bonfire is lit, around which the entire community gathers.
At the center of the rite is the 'Vecia', a puppet representing the past year: burning it means leaving the old behind and welcoming the new year with good auspices. It is a tradition with ancient roots, linked to fire rituals that over the centuries have intertwined with the Christian feast of Epiphany and the journey of the Magi.
Brusa la Vecia is above all a moment of collective and intergenerational participation: families, the elderly, and children gather around the fire in a spirit of friendship and sharing. The event, deeply linked to the identity of the district and the city of Verona, in the province of Verona (Veneto Region), represents one of the most authentic expressions of the popular traditions of the Scaliger territory.
Forte Gisella is located in the Santa Lucia district, on the western outskirts of Verona, reachable by car or public transport from the city center.
Free and outdoor event; the bonfire is lit on the evening of January 6th from 6 PM.
