The festival of ancient flavors and local traditions, held in mid-July in the historic center of San Lupo
There is a verb in the name of this event, and it is no coincidence: vagare (to wander). At Borgo Vagare per... San Lupo, you don't sit at a single table; you walk. Visitors enter the historic center of San Lupo, in the Municipality of San Lupo in the province of Benevento (Campania), and let themselves be guided by the alleys, stairways, and squares of the village, where every corner hosts something: a stall of local products, a craftsman, a group of musicians, or an exhibitor who has opened the trunk of their car. It is a simple and highly effective formula, as the village itself becomes the stage for the event.
The official subtitle is Festival of ancient flavors and local traditions, which perfectly explains the concept: not just one product being celebrated, but a gastronomic map of the entire Sannio region. The Pro Loco San Lupo, which organizes the event under the patronage of the Municipality and UNPLI, gathers Pro Loco associations from neighboring towns, each with its own specialty. Recent editions have featured participants such as Guardia Sanframondi, Telesia, Solopaca, Casalduni, San Salvatore Telesino, Castelvenere, Civitella Licinio, Acquaviva, and Circello. Stalls have showcased stuffed peppers and fried zeppole with anchovies or zucchini flowers from San Lupo, the scarpella from Castelvenere, the parruozzo from Guardia Sanframondi, panzerotti from Civitella, abbuoti from Casalduni, struppolo from San Salvatore Telesino, sciavola from Circello, taralli, and the sulfurous water of Telese Terme.
One of the key ingredients that has made Borgo Vagare recognizable is the Fiera del Bagagliaio (Trunk Fair): improvised stalls in car trunks where used items, vintage pieces, curiosities, and small crafts are sold and traded. In recent editions, the fair has taken place from the afternoon until late evening, from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM, spread along the same route as the food stalls: you can eat, listen to music, and hunt for the perfect item all in one go.
The entertainment is primarily provided by folk music and street arts. Past editions have featured brass and saxophones in the alleys, folk music groups and tarantellas, bands ranging from classic Neapolitan songs to pop and reggae, fire shows, and DJ sets in the latter part of the evening. The experience is completed by guided tours of the village and the street art murals that have colored some of the town's facades over the years—a widespread heritage that the festival helps to promote.
In March 2026, during the national ceremony organized in Rome by UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy), Borgo Vagare received the 'Quality Festival and Event' mark: a recognition that rewards the Pro Loco's ability to combine the promotion of local flavors with the enhancement of cultural and landscape heritage, through guided tours, meetings, discussions, music, and tastings dedicated to local products. For a town of only a few hundred inhabitants, this is a significant achievement that speaks volumes about the volunteer work behind the event.
San Lupo is located in the Sannio area of Benevento, between the Telesina Valley and the foothills of the Matese mountains, in a region of vineyards, olive groves, and small-scale farming. It is the home of the Regina bean, a rare legume celebrated in autumn with a dedicated festival, and it experiences its most heartfelt religious moment during the patronal feast, traditionally held between July 26 and 30. Borgo Vagare thus fits into a dense summer calendar, making the small Campanian municipality an interesting stop for those visiting the province of Benevento during the warmer months.
The event is scheduled every year for mid-July, spanning two consecutive days, usually Saturday and Sunday, with free admission. Exact dates and the full program are announced by the Pro Loco San Lupo and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the event: it is advisable to check the official channels before traveling.
The Benevento festival calendar placed the 2026 edition of Borgo Vagare per... San Lupo on the weekend of Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, 2026, in the historic center of the Municipality of San Lupo, in Campania. It was the usual mid-July event, which the Pro Loco San Lupo has built over the years around a very simple idea: to make the public walk through the village, scattering the flavors of nearby Pro Loco associations, the Trunk Fair stalls, and music along the way.
The 2026 edition arrived a few months after an important recognition: the 'Quality Festival and Event' national mark assigned by UNPLI in Rome in March 2026, along with other Italian Pro Loco associations, for the festival's ability to combine the promotion of local flavors with the enhancement of the cultural and landscape heritage of the Sannio region.
The complete program for the 2026 edition—precise times, list of stalls, and guest artists—was not published online by the organizers at the time of writing. In recent editions, the days ran from the afternoon (4:00 PM) until 11:00 PM, with free admission.
