About Bolsena Living Nativity

Every year, between Christmas and Epiphany, the Castello district of Bolsena transforms into a vast open-air nativity scene. Over 200 performers bring to life a 700-meter path lit by torches and candles, featuring scenes of daily life, ancient crafts, a Roman camp, and the Nativity at the foot of the Rocca Monaldeschi. Organized by the La Corte dei Miracoli association, it is one of the most evocative Christmas events in the Viterbo Tuscia region of Lazio.

A living nativity in the medieval heart of Bolsena

The Bolsena Living Nativity is one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in the Viterbo Tuscia area. Each year, between late December and Epiphany, the charming Castello districtโ€”the oldest part of the village overlooking Lake Bolsenaโ€”is transformed into a grand open-air nativity scene. The alleys, stairways, and small squares of the historic center are illuminated by torches and candles, recreating the atmosphere of Palestine at the time of the Nativity.

A 700-meter journey by torchlight

The performance unfolds along a 700-meter route winding through the medieval quarter. Visitors walk through the scene, guided by soft lighting and ambient sounds, encountering various settings along the way. The Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara dominates the backdrop, illuminated for the occasion and topped by a large comet star that welcomes visitors.

Over 200 performers and traditional scenes

The nativity comes to life thanks to over 200 costumed performers, supported by numerous volunteers and the Red Cross, which provides assistance along the route. Visitors pass through fifteen living tableaux: the market with its workshops, the Roman camp, the census palace, the leper colony, and scenes of ancient trades, featuring live demonstrations of traditional craftsmanship. The evenings are enlivened by musicians, bagpipers, dance groups, and the famous Lavandaie della Tuscia (Washerwomen of Tuscia). At the heart of the performance is the Nativity, featuring a local newborn as Baby Jesus.

The evening program

On the first few nights, Mary and Joseph begin the story with their pilgrimage in search of shelter for the imminent birth. The Epiphany evening is dedicated to the arrival of the Three Wise Men, who travel the entire length of the nativity path to the manger to offer their gifts. Performances take place in the evening, starting at 5:30 PM, when the darkness best highlights the lighting effects and scenery.

Flavors of Tuscia along the way

Small tasting areas are set up along the route, offering typical local products that allow visitors to warm up and savor regional specialties between scenes. Admission is free, and proceeds from donations support local volunteer associations.

Bolsena, the lakeside village in the Province of Viterbo

Located in the Municipality of Bolsena, in the Province of Viterbo and the Lazio region, the village is famous for its volcanic lake and the Eucharistic Miracle of 1263, which gave rise to the Corpus Domini feast. The Living Nativity, organized by the La Corte dei Miracoli association with the support of the Municipality and the Pro Loco, combines faith, popular tradition, and the promotion of historical heritage, cementing its status as one of the premier Christmas events in northern Lazio.
