The Valsesia carnival of Gianperu and Catlina, featuring the traditional paniccia soup served in the village square.
In the heart of the Valsesia valley, in the province of Vercelli and the Piedmontese Alps, the village of Boccioleto preserves a carnival with an authentic, local charm. Far from the media-driven parades, the Boccioleto Carnival is a community ritual that involves the entire village and its surrounding hamlets, organized by the Carnival Committee in collaboration with the Pro Loco and the municipal administration.
The stars of the festival are the traditional masks of Gianperu and Catlina, symbolic figures around whom the entire carnival calendar revolves. The masked group enlivens the various events and welcomes masks from other committees in the valley, in a festive twinning that is one of the most beautiful features of the Valsesia carnival.
The most anticipated moment is the distribution of paniccia, the traditional Valsesia soup made with rice and vegetables, enriched with beans, cured meats, meat, and bread. Prepared for hours in large cauldrons, it is blessed and then served to everyone at the Boccioleto Theatre, which also hosts the community lunch. More than just a dish, the paniccia embodies the charitable spirit of sharing that has always defined this meal, once linked, according to popular tradition, to the act of feeding the needy.
The carnival is not limited to a single day. It begins with the traditional rounds through the houses of the village and its hamlets, continues with the Grand Ball of the Catlina at the theatre, and concludes with the evocative burning of the Gianperu, accompanied by the reading of his will and a dinner of 'nervetti' (veal cartilage salad). A sequence of rituals that makes this festival an authentic treasure of popular traditions in the Piedmontese mountains.
Participating in the Boccioleto Carnival means experiencing a genuine community celebration, immersed in the landscapes of the Valsesia valley at the foot of Monte Rosa. It is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known Piedmont, rich in identity, where traditions are passed down from generation to generation and the hospitality is sincere.
The 2026 edition of the Boccioleto Carnival enlivened the Valsesia village with its usual calendar of popular rituals, from the traditional rounds through the hamlets to the distribution of the paniccia, and finally the burning of the Gianperu. The committee president, Simone Preti, gave a very positive assessment, thanking the masked group, the masks from other committees who attended the lunch, the municipal administration, the Pro Loco, and the cooks.
Events mainly take place at the Boccioleto Theatre and in the village squares, in the Valsesia valley (province of Vercelli, Piedmont).
By car: from Romagnano Sesia / Borgosesia, travel up the Valsesia valley along the SS299 towards Alagna, then turn off towards Boccioleto. By train: reach the Varallo Sesia station, then continue by bus or car along the valley.
The distribution of the paniccia is offered to the public; for the lunch and evening events at the theatre, please check the details and contributions with the Pro Loco.
