The Magnum exhibition at Palazzo Attems Petzenstein in Gorizia
Back to Peace? War Seen by Great Magnum Photographers is the exhibition-event set up at Palazzo Attems Petzenstein, home of the Provincial Museums of Gorizia, in Piazza Edmondo de Amicis. A review that brings together the largest selection of photographs by the great authors of the historic Magnum Photos agency dedicated to reports from World War II and the early post-war years: over 200 images that tell the story of the conflict and the difficult return to peace.
On display are works by the founders and protagonists of Magnum: Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David "Chim" Seymour, Eve Arnold, Renรฉ Burri, Erich Hartmann, Thomas Hoepker, and many others. Shots that have become icons of the 20th century, capable of conveying with extraordinary power the drama of war, the suffering of civilians, and the fragile hope of reconstruction. The exhibition is curated by Andrea Holzherr and Marco Minuz.
The exhibition path is not limited to photographs: video installations, soundscapes, and historical objects accompany the visitor in an immersive and engaging experience. One section is dedicated to the local dimension, with materials from the Photo Library of the Provincial Museums that tell the story of divided Gorizia in the post-war period through the shots of photographer G. Lazzaro.
Organized by ERPAC, the Regional Body for the Cultural Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and produced by Suazes in collaboration with Magnum Photos, the exhibition is part of the GO!2025 program, the year of Gorizia and Nova Gorica European Capital of Culture. In a city that is a symbol of the border and reconciliation, the question mark in the title invites reflection: is a return to peace truly possible?
