The popular summer festival at the Circolo ARCI Concetto Marchesi park, in Tiburtino III
Avanguardia - The Festival! is the summer event that brings the Circolo ARCI Concetto Marchesi park to life every year. Located at Via del Frantoio 9c in the Tiburtino III district (a stone's throw from Colli Aniene and Pietralata), in the city of Rome, Lazio. Organized by the Communist Youth Front together with the Communist Front, the festival combines live music, culture, political debate, and conviviality in a suburban green space that becomes a meeting place for the entire city for several nights.
The heart of the event is the stage. Every evening features a rotation of free concerts, theatrical performances, stand-up comedy, poetry readings, DJ sets, and dancing. Over the years, the Via del Frantoio park has hosted names from the world of singer-songwriters, folk, independent rock, reggae, and Italian rap, often as exclusive Roman stops on their summer tours. Shows begin around 9:00 PM, and the festival grounds are open from 6:00 PM.
Alongside the music, the program offers debates on local and international politics, book presentations, film and documentary screenings with directors and actors in attendance, as well as exhibitions and cultural initiatives. This is the core identity of the festival: an open, free, and accessible space for discussion, designed primarily for the youth of the neighborhood and the city.
The gastronomic side, managed by volunteers, is not to be missed: the affordable kitchen serves simple dishes from the Roman and Italian tradition throughout the festival, accompanied by a bar offering aperitifs and beer. Outdoor tables under the park's trees, queues at the kiosk, and evenings that stretch late into the night are part of the typical atmosphere of local summer festivals.
Political and popular festivals have been part of the Roman summer for decades. Born as moments of self-financing and social gathering, they have evolved over time into genuine free neighborhood festivals with curated musical programming and an intergenerational audience. Avanguardia fully embraces this tradition, with the unique feature of taking place in a suburban park, in a working-class area of the capital often far from tourist circuits, and being entirely self-financed and managed by volunteers.
For those visiting Rome in July, Avanguardia is an opportunity to experience an evening off the beaten path of the historic center: quality live music without a ticket, affordable prices, an open-air park, and a local festival atmosphere. It is also a great way to understand how the capital experiences summer beyond the Colosseum and Trastevere, in the neighborhoods where the daily life of Romans is concentrated.
From July 8th to 12th, 2026, the Circolo ARCI Concetto Marchesi park hosted the new edition of Avanguardia, the festival of the Communist Youth Front and the Communist Front. Five days of free programming in the Tiburtino III district of Rome, including concerts, screenings, debates on local and international politics, book presentations, exhibitions, and the usual affordable cuisine.
The 2026 musical lineup featured two exclusive Roman dates of their respective summer tours: Giorgio Canali & Rossofuoco on Friday the 10th and the Modena City Ramblers on Saturday, July 11th. Completing the program was the evening dedicated to Rino Gaetano with Sei Ottavi and the opening on Wednesday the 8th with the screening of the film Le città di pianura, followed by a meeting with actor and musician Pierpaolo Capovilla. The festival concluded on Sunday, July 12th, with a message of solidarity and commitment from the organizers.
Opening of the festival. Screening of the film Le città di pianura, winner of 8 David di Donatello awards, with a presentation and debate featuring actor and musician Pierpaolo Capovilla. Reservations were required for the screening.
