Vintage cars turn Via Cola di Rienzo into an open-air museum
For one Sunday a year, Via Cola di Rienzo, one of the most elegant shopping streets in the Prati district, is closed to traffic for the entire day and turns into an open-air museum. From one end of the street to the other, reaching Piazza Cola di Rienzo, dozens of vintage cars and motorcycles are lined up: pre-war sedans, 1960s spiders, the compact cars that defined the Italian economic boom, and collectible custom models. Admission is free and open to all, allowing the public to walk among the vehicles, chat with the owners, and take close-up photos without barriers or ticket booths.
Autoantiqua was born from an idea by the Associazione Commercianti Prati Cola di Rienzo, realized in collaboration with the cultural association Una Strada per l'Arte and the Autoantiqua Club Italia, under the patronage of the Municipio Roma I Centro and Roma Capitale. The event is recognized as a historical manifestation of the First Municipality: it is not a commercial fair, but a neighborhood festival designed to return the streets to pedestrians and bring a public that usually attends vintage car rallies outside the city into the center. The Prati district, built in the late 19th century between the Tiber and the Vatican, provides this automotive promenade with a backdrop of Umbertine palaces and historic storefronts.
Alongside the vehicles, the day unfolds across several themes. From the morning, a vintage and antiques market is set up, featuring modern antiques, handicrafts, and small collectibles. Artists from Una Strada per l'Arte display their works along the sidewalk, while music accompanies the central hours of the day: institutional bands and military fanfares in the morning, live piano, and Argentine tango performances in the afternoon. For families, play areas and activities dedicated to children are provided, while the street's bars and restaurants set up outdoor tables.
The most scenic moment of the event is the Gran Premio Eleganza Auto, a style competition held in the morning on the Pincio terrace, overlooking Piazza del Popolo. About twenty selected vehicles are judged by a qualified jury on their preservation, originality, and aesthetic harmony. At noon, the cars drive in a procession from the Pincio toward Prati to reach the main exhibition, and in the late afternoon, the awards ceremony takes place with a parade of the winning vehicles.
In recent years, the spring Sunday has been joined by a special autumn edition dedicated to uniformed vehicles: historical and modern vehicles from the Carabinieri, State Police, Fire Brigade, Italian Red Cross, Army, Navy, Air Force, Guardia di Finanza, and Civil Protection, all displayed along Via Cola di Rienzo with the Carabinieri fanfare in parade. It is a way to recount a century of public rescue and service to the State through ambulances, patrol cars, and fire engines.
Autoantiqua remains one of the few Roman events where Italy's automotive heritage is displayed for free in the city center, in a day that is simultaneously a rally, a market, and a neighborhood stroll.
On Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 10 AM to 7 PM, Via Cola di Rienzo was once again closed to traffic for the 9th edition of Autoantiqua. Along the street and up to Piazza Cola di Rienzo, vintage cars and motorcycles were lined up, accompanied by a vintage market, works by artists from Una Strada per l'Arte, and a musical program distributed throughout the day.
Among the protagonists of the 2026 edition, the Military Corps of the Italian Red Cross showcased a selection of rescue vehicles arranged in chronological order: from the original hand-drawn ambulance to the 1938 Bianchi S9 with Garavini bodywork, up to the Iveco VM90 4x4 protected ambulance equipped with a defibrillator and oxygen therapy, recounting a century of evolution in medical rescue.
The day concluded at 5 PM with the awards ceremony for the Gran Premio Eleganza Auto and the parade of the winning vehicles. The event was held under the patronage of the Municipio Roma I Centro, with free admission.
Metro: Line A, Lepanto or Ottaviano-San Pietro-Musei Vaticani stops, both just a few minutes' walk from Via Cola di Rienzo. Bus: Numerous lines serve Piazza Cola di Rienzo and the Lungotevere. Train: From Roma Termini station, you can reach Lepanto via Metro A in about 15 minutes. Car: Not recommended; the street is closed to traffic all day and the Prati district has limited parking.
Free admission, no reservation required. The exhibition generally runs from the morning (10:00 AM) until evening (7:00 PM). Exhibitors wishing to bring a vehicle must register in advance by writing to [email protected], attaching photos and vehicle details.
Arrive in the morning to see the competition at the Pincio and the procession of cars heading toward Prati. The area offers many dining options and shops open on Sundays; for accommodation, Prati is full of hotels and bed and breakfasts just a stone's throw from the Vatican.
